The Duke University women's lacrosse team collected its sixth consecutive win with a 12-7 decision over 17th-ranked Stanford on Saturday. Katie Chrest (Hampstead, Md.) paced the Blue Devil attack with three goals and three assists. The freshman attack now leads Duke with 27 goals, 11 assists and 38 points on the season.
The Blue Devils, ranked third in the latest IWLCA poll, are now 9-1 overall, including a 5-1 mark against teams ranked in the top-20 of the IWLCA poll. With the loss the Cardinal fall to 6-2 on the year.
Duke opened the scoring 5:24 into the contest as Katie Laschinger (Lutherville, Md.) collected the goal off a pass from Chrest. Stanford knotted the score 1-1 with 8:31 gone by, but Chrest scored just 13 seconds later to regain the one goal advantage for the Blue Devils.
Duke would also score the next three goals with Chrest assisting on goals by Jessica Bennett (Gladstone, N.J.) and junior Meghan Miller (Severna Park, Md.), before Kristy Dirks (Annapolis, Md.) deposited a Laschinger pass into the back of the net at the 21:23 mark for a 5-1 lead.
Stanford closed the gap to 5-3 at the half as Abbi Hills and Kim Cahill registered goals in the final eight minutes of the opening stanza.
A Kelly Twist goal 3:23 into the second half closed the score to 5-4, but Duke quickly responded as Bennett netted her second goal at 35:03 and then assisted on a Chrest goal 21 seconds later to push the Blue Devil lead back to three goals.
Corrine Broesler (Babylon, N.Y.) collected her first goal at 46:12 with Lauren Gallagher (West Chester, Pa.) assisting on the play. A goal by Stanford's Hills at 47:26 narrowed the score to 8-5 in favor of Duke.
Senior Erin O'Shaughnessy (Englewood, Colo.) helped stretch the margin to 10-5, assisting on goals by Chrest (47:39) and Broesler (51:52). The Duke lead swelled to 12-5 with Kate Kaiser (Cockeysville, Md.) collecting an assist and a goal while Broesler completed her hat-trick at 52:34.
Stanford tallied the final two goals of the contest as Mills collected her third marker and Megan Burker scored for the second time. For the game, the Blue Devils out shot Stanford, 41-12.
Duke continues its four-game road trip on Wednesday, April 2 when it faces #20 Vanderbilt at 3:00 p.m.
