The Duke University women's lacrosse team collected its fifth consecutive win with a 14-11 decision over third-ranked Georgetown on Saturday. The Blue Devils, ranked fourth in the latest IWLCA poll, are now 8-1 overall, including a 4-1 mark against teams ranked in the top-20 of the IWLCA poll. The Hoyas took their first loss, falling to 5-1 on the year.
Eight different players registered a goal or assist for Duke, led by a four-goal, one-assist effort from freshman Katie Chrest (Hampstead, Md.). Chrest, the team's leading scorer, opened the game with her first goal less than two minutes into the contest. A Kate Kaiser (Cockeysville, Md.) goal 3:59 into the game left the score at 2-0 in favor of the visiting team.
Georgetown countered with a Lauryn Bernier goal at 21:25, but Caline McHenry's (Reisterstown, Md.) free position goal at 17:19 pushed the Duke lead back to two goals at 3-1. Chrest netted her second goal of the day 12 seconds later to extend the lead to 4-1.
Wick Stanwick scored just over 30 seconds later, but again Duke countered, this time on Chrest's third goal of the half with 12:08 remaining before intermission. Georgetown quickly closed the gap to 5-4 with a pair of goals in the next two minutes, the final goal coming from Liz Ryan at the 10:06.
The Blue Devils stopped the rally and stretched its lead with three goals in the final six minutes of the half. Senior Jessica Bennett (Gladstone, N.J.) and sophomore Katie Laschinger (Lutherville, Md.) ignited the Duke surge with Bennett collecting two goals and an assist and Laschinger earning a goal and an assist. Bennett's final goal, which gave Duke an 8-4 lead, came off a Lauren Gallagher (West Chester, Pa.) pass with just four seconds left before halftime.
The Hoyas opened the second half with a goal 29 seconds into the frame, but Chrest collected her fourth goal of the day and 24th of the season with 27:56 remaining to push the lead back to 9-5. Gallagher beat the Georgetown goalie at the 21:35 mark in the half for a 10-5 Blue Devil lead.
Georgetown rattled off three straight goals, including two by Bernier, to close the gap to 10-8 with 15 minutes left play. Sophomore Kristy Dirks (Annapolis, Md.) gave Duke a needed boost with back-to-back goals 21 seconds apart for a four-goal Blue Devil cushion at 12-8.
After a Stanwick goal cut the lead to 12-9 with 10 minutes left to play, Gallagher collected her second goal of the day with Chrest assisting on the play. Stanwick registered two more goals to narrow the deficit to 13-11 with 3:45 remaining, before Kaiser closed the scoring with 2:57 left.
Freshman goalie Megan Huether (Lutherville, Md.) recorded 10 saves for the Blue Devils as Georgetown out shot Duke 30-21 in the contest. Duke continues its four-game road trip on Saturday, March 29 when it faces Stanford at 12:00 p.m.
