Head coach Kerstin Kimel announced the team captains for the Duke University women's lacrosse team today, while also releasing the 2004 team schedule. Seniors Cheryl Lynn Horton, Meghan Miller and Meghan Walters, along with junior Stefanie Sparks, will captain the Blue Devils this season as they seek a sixth straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
"I am pleased that Cheryl Lynn, Meg Miller, Walters and Stef will be our captains this season. All four are outstanding players with great work ethic and a desire to see this team achieve its goals," said Kimel. "Throughout their careers, they have demonstrated to their teammates and the coaching staff that they are capable of providing great leadership, both on and off the field. We are confident that they will do an outstanding job of leading their teammates to reach our potential this season."
Last season, Duke finished 13-5 overall with an 8-5 mark against nationally ranked teams. The Blue Devils will once again play a schedule littered with the top teams in the country, including seven opponents that reached the NCAA Tournament a year ago.
"Once again, we will look forward to playing one of the nation's most challenging schedules and facing the best competition in the country this season," said Kimel. "The difficulty of our conference and non-conference schedules is great preparation for our players as we look to challenge for the 2004 National Championship."
Duke's seven-game home schedule consists of two three-game homestands and an April 16 match with Stanford. After opening the season on the road, the Blue Devils host Northwestern (Feb. 22), Maryland (Feb. 27) and Johns Hopkins (Feb. 29) in consecutive games. The team begins another three-game home stretch on Mar. 21 when they host Georgetown before entertaining Vanderbilt (Mar. 28) and Virginia (April 3). Duke's final home match of the season against Stanford comes one week prior to the ACC Tournament (April 23-25).
The team's road schedule features the season-opener against UMBC (Feb. 20), a pair of games in Orlando, Fla., against Duquesne (Mar. 6) and Notre Dame (Mar. 10) as well as trips to 2003 NCAA Tournament qualifiers Princeton (Mar. 17), Loyola (April 9) and Dartmouth (May 6). The Blue Devils also face road contests with North Carolina (Mar. 13), Richmond (April 11) and Hofstra (May 8).
Kimel, entering her eighth season in charge of the Blue Devil program, owns an 83-55 record at Duke and an 87-63 career mark. She enters the 2004 season with nine returning starters, including leading scorer Katie Chrest and goalie Megan Huether. In addition, Kimel welcomes the second-best recruiting class in the country, as rated by Inside Lacrosse Magazine.
