 Ewing Holds Up His ACC MVP Trophy From Last Year

Friday, October 17, 2003, Daniel Ewing stopped by to chat on GoDuke.com as the team prepares to kick of the 2003-04 season Friday night with AM Mayhem (midnight practice).

Below is the transcript of Daniel's chat:

Moderator: Hey everybody, Daniel is here to start the chat, lets get going!

Jules G /Houston, TX: What are the team's goals this year and in contrast, what are your personal goals this year?

Daniel Ewing: Our team goals are to be the best team we can be, win as many games as possbile and hopefully have a shot at winning a national championship.

Amy, Greensboro: What do you think defines a good leader on and off the court and who do you think will show the passion that it takes to be the leader?

Daniel Ewing: A good leader is a person who demonstrates their leadership abilities on and off the court. The team respects that person for what they do on and off the court and that carries over in game and what they do academically and socially.

Clark (Raleigh): What part of your game did you focus on the most during the off season?

Daniel Ewing: This summer I wanted to focus on putting on about 10 pounds of muscle. Most of the time I focused on playing the point a little bit more and my ball handling skills.

New York: What game are you most looking forward to this season?

Daniel Ewing: Pretty much every game is going to be exciting for us because teams are going to come after us because of the program that we play for. If I had to pinpoint any games I'd have to say that I'm looking forward to the Michigan State game and the Texas game besides our conference games.

bobbi jo, Elizabeth City, NC: Who is the former Duke b-ball player that you most most up to?

Daniel Ewing: I would have to say Grant Hill. Ever since I've been watching Duke, that's been my favorite player.

Steven Canton, CT: Daniel, What's your thoughts on Luol Deng so far? Everyone is saying he is going to be a great player.

Daniel Ewing: Luol, he's a great guy. He will really contribute with what we are trying to do this season with his ability offensively and defensively.

Destinee: How did if feel to be the 2003 ACC Tournament Most Valuable Player?

Daniel Ewing: It felt great to be considered the most valuable player of the ACC tournament. It was really an honor to receive that award.

Markus H-town: Man how does it feel to be in your third year and what was going through your mind when T.J went to the league.

Daniel Ewing: Time has flown really fast for me, coming up on my third year at Duke. It's kind of weird that one of my best friend is making millions of dollars in the NBA. I'm really happy for him.

Bill, Kansas City: What's your impressions of the progress of our big guys over the summer?

Daniel Ewing: Pretty much all of our big guys came back from the summer with a different look. I think they all took it personal that last year everyone said that we didn't have an inside presence. They all took the summer to improve their game and improve their bodies. This year they'll really help us with our inside presense.

tyffanie(jersey city, nj): what do you do in your spare time when your not on the court?

Daniel Ewing: I'm a laid back guy. I like to go out every now and then. Most of the time I'm playing video games if I'm not in the gym in my spare time.

Laura ( Cleveland, OH): Who pulls the best pranks on the team? Have they ever gotten you good?

Daniel Ewing: Andre Buckner was the prankster of last year's team. He had something new for you every day. This year, we haven't really found that jokester yet but we have a lot of silly guys on the team.

Geoff (Bronx): Whats it like to play in front of the Cameron Crazies?

Daniel Ewing: It's a great atmosphere playing in Cameron. With the Cameron Crazies jumping all around it gives you a rush that you can't explain.

Jeff (Lancaster, PA): Hey Daniel. With the Final Four in San Antonio this year, it will be a homecoming for you. How cool would that be for you?

Daniel Ewing: It would be really great if we could make it to the Final Four especially since it's in San Antonio which is a city in my home state. It would be real special for me becuase it would be the closest I'd ever been to playing near home.

Goose, Cary, NC: Are you looking forward to having AM Mayhem as this is your first since being at Duke?

Daniel Ewing: I'm really looking forward to AM Mayhem. It's going to be a real exciting and fun night for us to start the season.

Warren (Greensboro): Who has the highest vertical on the team? Who has the best bench Press? Thanks

Daniel Ewing: I think it was either Patrick Davidson or Sheldon Williams. Hands down Nick Horvath has the best bench press. He lifts every day.

Margaret (Chatham): Is there any significance to you wearing number 5?

Daniel Ewing: Not really, I wore No. 3 in high school, but that number was taken so I decided to try and stay with a low number and 5 was the lowest I was able to get.

Billings: Daniel, How do you feel about the changes that have been made with the ACC? Do you think it will benefit the conference?

Daniel Ewing: The changes I think will more likely benefit the ACC with football. As far as basketball, I'm looking forward to making that trip down to Miami.

Chris (Long Island): Hey Danny, Can you see the NBA in your future?

Daniel Ewing: The NBA is a dream of mine. I do see myself playing in the NBA sometime in the future. Right now, I'm just focusing on this season and finishing out my college career.

Joe (Raleigh): Daniel, who are you pulling for? The Yankees or the Marlins?

Daniel Ewing: I'm going for the Marlins because I'm not a big fan of the Yankees.
