WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. - With one round to play at the 2002 NCAA Fall Preview, the top-ranked Duke women's golf team sits three shots back in tied for third place at the Par 72, 6,225-yard Kampen Golf Course in West Lafayette, Ind. The Blue Devils (597) trail Oklahoma State (594), Vanderbilt (595) and are tied with Arizona (597).
"We had some good stuff going on for most of the round today," said Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks. "We slipped a little at the end, but we are in good shape heading into the final round only three strokes back. The team is in good spirits and those three strokes can be made up quickly on the first three holes on Tuesday."
The second round was a tale of two nines as the Blue Devils made the turn even par, but ended up finishing 10-over-par for the day. The final three holes were the telling point as Duke finished nine-over-par.
Blue Devil freshman Liz Janangelo (West Hartford, Conn.) and junior Leigh Anne Hardin (Martinsville, Ind.) each turned in a team-best 74 on Monday. Janangelo had a wild day on the course with one eagle, two birdies and six double-bogies. The eagle came on the Par 5, 470-yard sixth hole where she chipped in from approximately 40 feet with a sand wedge.
"My first two rounds of collegiate golf have been terrific," said Janangelo. "It is so much different than junior golf and the team experience is awesome. We have learned a lot these first two days and now we need to go out and finish strong tomorrow."
Hardin made the turn two-under-par as she notched birdies on the second and eighth holes and was two-under with four holes to play, but had two bogies and a double-bogey to finish the day. Her three birdies was the most for the Blue Devils. Janangelo and Hardin rank tied 13th and tied 30th in the individual leaderboard, respectively.
Sophomore Niloufar Aazam-Zanganeh (Lausanne, Switzerland) turned in a very nice second round with a 75, but was cruising along at even par until the final two holes where she had a bogey and double-bogey to finish off the round. Kristina Engstrom, a senior native of Djursholm, Sweden) was even par through 10 holes but had three bogies and a double-bogey to finish with a 77. Duke's Virada Nirapathpongporn (Bangkok, Thailand) struggled on Monday with an 80 after posting a 72 on day one.
There will be a shotgun start beginning at 8:30 AM on Tuesday for the final round. Duke will be playing with Vanderbilt and Oklahoma State, while teeing off on holes one through three.
