DURHAM, N.C. - The ninth-ranked Duke women's lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight for the fourth consecutive year with a 10-5 victory over 10th-ranked Vanderbilt on Thursday at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C.
Vanderbilt (10-6) took control of the match early, scoring the first goal of the match just three minutes into play and took a 4-2 lead with 8:38 left in the first half. The Blue Devils were forced to call a timeout and after play resumed Duke stormed back with three goals in the final six minutes of action to take a 5-4 lead into halftime. All five goals scored by the Blue Devils in the first half were by five different players- Meg Barnet (Adelaide, S. Australia), Katie Laschinger (Lutherville, Md.), Erin O'Shaughnessy (Englewood, Colo.), Lauren Gallagher (West Chester, Pa.) and Cheryl Lynn Horton (Walnut Creek, Calif.).
Duke continued its domination of the Commodores through the second half as Horton and O'Shaughnessy scored three straight goals in a span of only 38 seconds to give the Blue Devils an 8-4 advantage. O'Shaughnessy connected on two consecutive goals during the stretch to give the junior 12 on the season.
Vanderbilt was held without a shot for the first 13 minutes of the second half. The lone second half goal was scored by Tara Schmucker at the 13:01 mark to cut the Duke lead to 8-5. Schmucker finished the day with two goals.
The Blue Devils added two late goals by Gallagher and senior Kelly Dirks (Annapolis, Md.) to give Duke a 10-5 victory. O'Shaughnessy matched a career high with three goals on the afternoon, while Gallagher and Horton each finished with two to lead the Blue Devils. Senior Kristin Foster (Ellicott City, Md.) was stellar in goal with six saves on 18 shots. For the second consecutive match, Duke tied registered a season-high 18 caused turnovers.
In the match, Duke senior Claire Sullivan (Washington, D.C.) started her 71st consecutive match against Vanderbilt to break the school record for most games started in a career.
Duke (10-7) will next take on top-seeded Georgetown (15-1) on Sunday, May 12 in Washington, D.C. Georgetown defeated Lafayette 20-9 on Thursday. Earlier this season, the Blue Devils lost 8-7 at home to the Hoyas.
