The Duke University women's lacrosse team improved to 9-7 on the season with a 13-7 win over Pennsylvania (7-8) on Saturday afternoon. Senior Kelly Dirks (Annapolis, Md.) tallied three goals with an assist and junior Lauren Gallagher (West Chester, Pa.) added three goals as the Blue Devils overcame soggy conditions and a slow start.
Penn jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the opening 10 minutes of the game as Crissy Book and Lindsay Cassidy sandwiched goals around a Blue Devil marker by Gallagher. Meghan Miller (Severna Park, Md.) then found the back of the net twice in less than a minute and a half to give Duke a 3-2 advantage with 14:52 gone in the opening half.
After a Traci Marabella goal knotted the score at 3-3, freshman Katie Laschinger (Luthersville, Md.) beat the Quaker goalie for her tenth goal of the season. With under six minutes remaining in the first half, Marabella re-tied the contest with her second goal of the day.
Gallagher, Duke's leading scorer, gave the Blue Devils a one goal advantage with 26:37 gone by in the game with her second scoring shot before halftime. Duke recorded 26 ground balls in the opening 30 minutes but was hindered by 14 first half turnovers.
The Blue Devils came out strong in the second stanza registering four goals in the first nine minutes of play. Corrine Broesler (Babylon, N.Y.) scored off an assist from Dirks two minutes and eighteen seconds into the half and senior Claire Sullivan (Washington, D.C.) tallied a goal at 36:01 to give Duke a 7-4 lead.
Broesler then found Dirks for a goal 37:09 second into the game and Jessica Bennett (Gladstone, N.J.) netted a shot for a 9-4 lead with just over 21 minutes remaining in the game. Whitney Horton and Book scored back-to-back goals for the Quakers to narrow the lead to 9-6, but Duke responded with three consecutive markers.
Cheryl Lynn Horton (Walnut Creek, Calif.) scored off a Bennett pass at 48:22 and Dirks beat the Penn goalie Aliana Harper high-side off a Laschinger feed for a 11-6 advantage. The lead swelled to 12-6 at 53:32 when Gallagher took a Miller pass and recorded her third goal of the day and 35 goal of the season.
Book completed her hat-trick for Penn at 53:41, before Dirks closed the scoring with just under five minute remaining in the game with her 34 goal of the season.
The Blue Devils recorded a season-high 50 ground balls, limiting Pen to 23 in the process. Duke also matched a season best 18 caused turnovers and outshot the Quakers 23-20.
Senior Kristen Foster (Ellicott City, Md.) registered six saves in win. Saturday's contest marked the final regular season game for the Duke senior class (Dirks, Foster, Sullivan and Kristen McElduff).
