Four Duke University women's lacrosse players were named to the 2002 Division I IWLCA/USL South Region All-America team on Thursday, May 16. Junior Lauren Gallagher (West Chester, Pa.) earned first team honors, while Caline McHenry (Reisterstown, Md.), Kelly Dirks (Annapolis, Md.) and Kristen Foster (Ellicott City, Md.) made the second team.
Gallagher helped lead the Blue Devils to a 10-8 season, including a fourth consecutive trip to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament, pacing the team in goals (38), assists (11), points (49) and shooting percentage (.494). The junior midfielder is a two-time All-ACC and All-South Region selection and already ranks among the Duke career leaders in goals (103 - 4th), assists (39 - 3rd) and points (142 - 3rd). Last season, Gallagher earned second team IWLCA All-America and first team USLacrosse All-America honors.
Dirks, a senior attack, registered 36 goals, 11 assists and 47 points for the Blue Devils. She closes her career ranked second in goals (125) and points (157) and fourth in assists with 32. Dirks was a 2002 All-ACC Tournament selection after she collected three goals in a 12-8 loss to North Carolina.
Midfielder Caline McHenry capped a strong sophomore campaign with 48 ground balls, 26 caused turnovers and 20 draw controls. The Reisterstown, Md. native earned All-ACC honors while starting all 18 games for the Blue Devils.
Foster concluded her Duke career as the most decorated goalkeeper in school history. In 54 career games, she posted 422 saves and a .541 save percentage. In 2002, Foster tallied 159 saves and established a new school record with a .609 save percentage in an 11-3 win over Johns Hopkins. Foster is a two-time All-ACC selection, South Region All-America and Tewaaranton Trophy nominee. Last season, she was an IWLCA and USLacrosse first team All-America.
