WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Seven Hoyas scored goals in the first period of play to lead No. 1 seeded Georgetown University to an 11-4 victory over Duke University in second round action of the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament on Sunday, May 12, at Kehoe Field.
Sophomore midfielder Anouk Peters (Ipswich, Mass./Millbrook School) led GU in scoring with three goals on the afternoon, while four different players tallied the Blue Devils' goals. The Hoyas advance to the Final Four for the second consecutive year where they will meet No. 4 seed Cornell on Friday, May 17, at 5:30 p.m.
Georgetown's offense was clicking on all cylinders as seven Hoyas posted goals in the first stanza. GU got off to a 2-0 lead with 22:11 to play in the period with goals from junior attacker Tracy Weickel (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) and sophomore midfielder Gloria Lozano (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickly Academy). Sophomore midfielder Michi Ellers (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) was credited with the assist on Weickel's goal, while junior attacker Wick Stanwick (Jr., Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Academy) picked up the assist on Lozano's.
Claire Sullivan was able to put the Blue Devils on the scoreboard at 21:53 with an unassisted tally, but Peters struck for her first goal of the day just 39 seconds later, and Stanwick found the back of the net at 17:30 to give Georgetown a 3-1 lead. Erin O'Shaughnessy set up a shot for Kelly Dirks at 16:28 to pull the Blue Devils to 4-2, but it would be the last time Duke would score in the first half.
The Hoyas reeled off four-straight goals; three on free position shots, to take an 8-2 lead into the intermission. Senior All-America attacker Erin Elbe (Sr., Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) was the first Hoya to capitalize on a free position at 11:31, followed by Peters at 7:53. Sixteen seconds later junior midfielder Liz Ryan (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country Day School) broke free of her defender to fire a shot into the net to give GU a 7-2 advantage. Freshman midfielder Lauryn Bernier (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) ended the first half by converting on a free position shot with just 24 seconds left in the period.
The second half was a war of the two squads' defensive units. Meghan Miller was awarded a free position shot at 24:13 which resulted in a goal to make the score 8-3. The two teams then went scoreless for almost 11 minutes, until Georgetown scored back-to-back goals. Elbe broke the scoring drought at 13:33, with Bernier picking up the assist. Peters slipped a shot past the Duke goalie at 6:42 to push the score to 10-3. Lauren Gallagher tallied the Blue Devils' last goal of the game at the 3:46 mark, but Weickel closed out the scoring when she picked up a feed from freshman attacker Sarah Oliphant (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and dropped it in the cage with just 1:43 left on the clock.
Senior Chandler Vicchio (Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) was sensational in goal for the Hoyas. Vicchio turned away 12 Duke shots in the game, including seven in the second half, while giving up just four goals. Duke senior goalkeeper Kristin Foster rejected 11 Georgetown shots on the day, while allowing all 11 goals.
Georgetown outshot Duke 27-16 and held a 12-5 advantage in draw controls. The Hoyas also scooped up one more ground ball on the afternoon (27-26), while the Blue Devils held a 12-8 edge in caused turnovers.
