The Duke University women's lacrosse team, 10-7 on the season, travels to Washington, D.C. to take on #2 Georgetown in the quarterfinals of the 2002 NCAA Division I Championship on Sunday, May 12 at 1:00 p.m. The Blue Devils advanced to the second round of the tournament with a 10-5 win over Vanderbilt on Thursday, while Georgetown downed Lafayette 20-9 in its first round contest.
Duke has made four consecutive Elite Eight appearances and will be seeking a second ever trip to the Final Four. Georgetown reached the championship game in 2001 before falling to Maryland, 14-13, in double-overtime.
In an earlier meeting this season, Georgetown bested the Blue Devils, 8-7, in a back and forth contest. Duke trailed 6-2 after thirty minutes of play, but opened the second half with five straight goals to take a 7-6 advantage with just over 15 minutes to play. The Hoyas responded with a pair of goals with ten minutes remaining in the game and then withstood a Duke charge that included two shots that caromed off the goal post to secure the win. Senior Kelly Dirks (Annapolis, Md.) paced Duke in the loss with four goals, while Lauren Gallagher (West Chester, Pa.) added a goal and an assist.
The winner of the Duke-Georgetown contest faces the winner of the Cornell-Maryland match for a chance to advance to the 2002 NCAA women's lacrosse championship game.
