Duke Women's Lacrosse Falls 6-5 at Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. -- Jen Newitt's goal with 1:07 left in regulation boosted No. 13 Dartmouth to a 6-5 victory over No. 7 Duke in women's lacrosse action on Friday night.

With the score tied at 5-5, the Blue Devils had possession but turned the ball over. Newitt, who is Dartmouth's leading scorer, then netted her 37th on the season.

Duke, 8-7 overall, won the draw and forced Dartmouth goalie Sarah Hughes to make two saves in the final 30 seconds on shots by Cheryl Lynn Horton and Kelly Dirks.

The Blue Devils started the game with goals by Horton and Lauren Gallagher for a 2-0 lead before the Big Green scored four in a span of 2:04.

Amy Frazier and Katieanne Christian each had one while Elizabeth Right scored two of her career-high three on the night to make it 4-2 Dartmouth with 14:12 remaining until the half.

Duke goals by Erin O'Shaughnessy, Dirks and Gallagher switched the score back to 5-4 with 15:11 on the clock.

Four minutes later, Right completed her hat trick off an assist from Newitt to tie the game at five apiece.

In the nets, Hughes made 12 saves for Dartmouth, while Duke's Kristin Foster stopped 11 shots.

Dartmouth improved to 10-4 on the season and hosts No. 3 North Carolina on Sunday at 12 noon. Duke will host Pennsylvania on May 4 at 5:00 PM.
