GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) released the 2002 All-ACC women's tennis team on Friday with three Blue Devils earning honors-- freshman Kelly McCain, sophomore Amanda Johnson and freshman Saras Arasu. McCain also picked up ACC Rookie of the Year accolades.
McCain, a product of Tampa, Fla., becomes the second-straight ACC Rookie of the Year selection from Duke and the fifth in the last nine seasons. Currently ranked fifth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, McCain has posted a 31-6 singles and 21-13 doubles mark on the season. In ACC action, she went 7-1 including a two-set victory over 2002 ACC Player of the Year Bea Bielik.
Johnson earns the honor for the second consecutive season, after registering a 25-8 singles and 22-8 doubles mark on the year. The Bettendorf, Iowa native went 7-0 in ACC action this season to improve her career mark to 15-0 in ACC singles action. Johnson is currently ranked 19th in the latest ITA rankings.
After registering a 26-7 overall and 8-0 ACC record in singles action this season, Arasu received All-ACC accolades. The Tampa, Fla. native is currently ranked 64th in the ITA rankings and played at the four through six positions for the Blue Devils this season. Heading in to the NCAA Tournament, Arasu has won 19 of her last 20 singles matches.
Since the ACC began selecting the All-ACC team in 1987, Duke has had three or more players selected All-ACC in every year. Duke (23-4 overall) is ranked fourth nationally and is preparing for the NCAA Tournament which begins on May 10-11.
