The Duke University women's lacrosse team improved to 8-6 on the season with a 12-7 win over James Madison (8-10) on Wednesday afternoon. Senior Kelly Dirks (Annapolis, Md.) tallied four goals and junior Erin O'Shaughnessy (Englewood, Co.) recorded a career-high five points on three goals and two assists in the win.
Lauren Gallagher (West Chester, Pa.) registered the first of her three goals 3:01 into the contest for a 1-0 lead. The junior midfielder has now scored in 36 consecutive contests. James Madison's Gail Decker responded 21 seconds later to knot the contest at 1-1.
Duke erupted for six consecutive goals as Dirks found the back of the net three times and O'Shaughnessy beat the James Madison keeper twice during the stretch. Meghan Miller (Severna Park, Md.) assisted on two of the Blue Devil goals, giving her seven assists on the year. Dirks' third goal of the half at the 26:20 mark spotted Duke to a 7-1 lead.
James Madison closed the opening stanza with goals by Decker (28:55) and Kristen Dinisio (29:16) to narrow the deficit to 7-3 at halftime. The Blue Devils outshot the Dukes 22-14 in the opening 30 minutes of play.
Gallagher sandwiched a pair of goals around a JMU goal by Lisa Staedt to give Duke a 9-4 advantage 12 minutes into the second half. Decker beat the Duke defense and keeper Kristen Foster (Ellicott City, Md.) to trim the Blue Devil lead to four goals at 43:08.
O'Shaughnessy responded at the 48:39 mark with her third goal of the day, pushing the lead to 10-5. After a goal by Corrine Broesler (Babylon, N.Y.), O'Shaughnessy assisted Dirks' fourth tally with under eight minutes remaining. James Madison closed strong with goals by Jess Brownridge and McNevin Molloy in the final seven minutes of play, narrowing the final margin to 12-7.
Foster played a solid game in goal registering 13 saves, giving her 125 stops on the year. Dirks and Gallagher are now tied for the team lead with 30 goals this season, while O'Shaughnessy matched her season point total of five.
Duke travels to Dartmouth on Friday, April 26 for a 7:00 p.m. contest before wrapping up the regular season at home on Saturday, May 4 versus Pennsylvania.
