DURHAM, N.C. - Senior Kristen Foster, junior Lauren Gallagher and sophomore Caline McHenry each were named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) women's lacrosse team on Thursday. It marks the second year in a row Foster has been selected ACC Goalkeeper of the Year.
Foster heads into the ACC Championship ranking second in the ACC in goals against average (8.27) and save percentage (.488). The native of Ellicott City, Md., was a Tewaaraton Trophy nominee as the National Player of the Year as a junior. She has started all 12 matches in 2002 recording 100 saves in 663 minutes.
A product of West Chester, Pa., Gallagher leads the Blue Devils in goals (25), assists (9), points (34) and caused turnovers (19). In three years, Gallagher ranks third all-time at Duke in goals (90), assists (37) and fifth in points (127). The honor for Gallagher marks the second year in a row the attacker has been selected All-ACC.
After coming off the bench in 18 games as a freshman last season, McHenry has started all 12 games for the Blue Devils at midfield. She has registered three goals, 12 caused turnovers and 16 draw controls on the season. A native of Reisterstown, Md., McHenry ranks fourth on the squad with 28 ground balls.
North Carolina midfielder Christine McPike earned ACC Player of the Year honors. McPike, a senior from Farmingdale, N.Y., has recorded 30 goals, four assists and 22 caused turnovers this season.
Virginia's Amy Appelt took Rookie of the Year honors. Appelt, a freshman from Garden City, N.Y., registered 36 goals and 19 assists in helping the Cavaliers win the regular-season championship. North Carolina head coach Jenny Slingluff Levy and Virginia head coach Julie Myers shared ACC Coach of the Year honors.
The sixth annual ACC Women's Lacrosse Championship will be held April 19 and 21 at Duke University. Virginia will face Maryland in the first semifinal at 1 p.m. while Maryland and North Carolina play in the second semifinal at 3:30 p.m. The Championship game will be held at 12 p.m. Sunday.
