The Duke University women's lacrosse team dropped a difficult 13-12 decision to 12th-ranked Yale on Saturday at Moose Krause Stadium in South Bend, Ind. The seventh-ranked Blue Devils (7-5 overall) were coming off a 10-9 triple-overtime victory over Notre Dame on Friday.
Duke jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a Lauren Gallagher (West Chester, Pa.) goal 1:32 into the contest. Yale countered with a goal from Katie Sargent to knot the contest. Gallagher found the back of the net again at the 8:00 mark, but Sargent again tied the game with her second goal of the day.
The two teams traded goals to make the score 3-3, before Kelly Dirks (Annapolis, Md.) assisted on Gallagher's third goal of the half and tallied a goal of her own to put Duke ahead 5-3. The Bulldogs scored back-to-back goals for the fourth tie of the half, but Duke again regained the lead when Jessica Bennett (Gladstone, N.J.) found the back of the net.
Yale responded with four consecutive goals, including a pair by Clarissa Clarke to claim a 9-6 advantage. Meg Barnet narrowed the Yale lead to 9-7 with a goal just five minutes before the end of the first half.
Sargent registered the first goal of the second half, giving the Bulldogs a 10-7 edge. Kelly Dirks cut the margin to 10-8 with her second goal of the day, with Corrine Broesler (Babylon, N.Y.) earning an assist on the play.
Sophie Melinker tallied a goal at 41:29 for an 11-8 Yale lead, but Jessica Bennett tallied an assist and a goal in a two minute span to get the Blue Devils to within one goal at 11-10. Melinker and Miles Whitman each scored their second goals of the day with just over ten minutes remaining to create a three goal advantage for Yale.
Duke rallied for a pair of goals in the final ten minutes, as Gallagher scored for the fourth time and Barnet recorded her second of the day, but could not overcome the three goal advantage. Barnet's goal with just over five minutes remaining created the final margin of 13-12.
