The Duke University women's golf team holds a seven stroke advantage after the opening round of the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Classic. The Blue Devils posted a 297 in the first round at Barton Creek Lakeside as Candy Hannemann (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Kristina Engstrom (Djursholm, Sweden) fired two-over rounds of 73.
Hannemann, the 2001 national champion, opened with a 38 on the front side, before responding with the third lowest backside total at 35. Engstrom recorded at front side score of 36 with a 37 on the back nine.
Hannemann and Engstrom are in second place individually, five strokes behind Janice Olivencia of Texas. Virada Nirapathpongporn (Bangkok, Thailand) opened the tournament with a 74 and sits in sixth place overall.
Freshman Niloufar Aazam-Zanganeh (Lausanne, Switzerland) is 15th overall after shooting a six-over 77. Leigh Anne Hardin (Martinsville, Ind.) and Maria Garcia-Estrada (Tenerife, Spain) posted an 85 and an 87, respectively for the Blue Devils.
