Duke head men's lacrosse coach Mike Pressler announced that Dave Klarmann, who coached North Carolina to the 1991 NCAA Championship, has joined the Blue Devil staff as a volunteer assistant coach.
"We are very excited to have Coach Klarmann join the Duke coaching staff," Pressler said. "I can't imagine a volunteer coach in Division I lacrosse with more experience than Dave. His primary responsibility will be working with the defensive players, and his presence at practice is a welcome addition."
Klarmann, who served as the head coach at Radford in 2001 and is currently employed by Realty World in Pittsboro, N.C., spent 10 seasons as the head coach at North Carolina, guiding the Tar Heels to an overall record of 100-52 (.658) along with five ACC Championships (1991, 1992, 1993, 1994 & 1997), seven NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1991 national title.
In 1991, Klarmann's first season at the helm of the Tar Heels, he directed North Carolina to a perfect 16-0 overall record including an 18-13 victory over Towson in the national championship game. The overall ledger equalled the second-best single-season record in the history of college lacrosse and allowed Klarmann to become just the second coach ever to lead a team to the national title in his first season as head coach, joining former Johns Hopkins coach Don Zimmerman.
His 1991 and 1993 North Carolina teams finished the year ranked number one in the country while his 1991, 1992 and 1993 squads all reached the Final Four. He was named the ACC Coach of the Year four times - in 1991, 1992, 1994 and 1996.
Prior to his head coaching tenure at North Carolina, Klarmann spent 12 seasons from 1979-90 as as assistant coach. In that time span, North Carolina won three NCAA Championships (1981, 1982 & 1986) as well as six ACC crowns.
Klarmann played collegiately at Nassau Community College in Garden City, N.Y., and, earned junior college All-America honors as a defenseman in 1974. He then transferred to North Carolina where he was a team captain and Second Team All-America pick in 1976 before graduating that year with a degree in education. He then spent the 1977 and 1978 seasons as an assistant coach at Duke, and worked as a graduate assistant in North Carolina's Department of History before returning to the Tar Heel men's lacrosse program for the 1979 campaign.
Klarmann, 50, and his wife, Julia, have two children, Bart (14) and Helen (12).
Duke opens the 2001 season at home against Butler on February 23.
