SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas - When you're coach of the No. 1 team in the nation and win by 40 points, you still have to find something to worry about.
Duke coach Gail Goestenkors said after Friday night's 92-52 victory over Detroit that she worried about getting too many turnovers and shooting 49 percent from the field.
"You get a false sense of security when you start stealing every ball," Goestenkors said after Duke forced 30 turnovers during a South Padre Island Shootout tournament game. "Sooner or later it can burn you."
Alana Beard had 27 points and eight rebounds, going 9-of-10 from the field and 8-of-9 from the free-throw line for Duke (11-0).
Duke put the game away early and led 51-30 at halftime. The Blue Devils moved within a victory of matching their best start, in 1989.
Detroit (2-7) shot well at 47 percent, but couldn't handle Duke's defense. Six Titans had at least three turnovers. Duke had 19 steals, led by four each from Iciss Tillis and Vicki Krapohl.
Lindsey Pasquinzo led Detroit with 19 points, going 6-of-9 from the field, including 4-of-6 on 3-pointers. But no other Titans player was in double figures.
Duke also got 14 points from Jessica Foley and 10 from Mistie Bass.
Because of scheduling problems, the tournament was played at Los Fresnos High School, located about 20 miles from South Padre Island.
About 1,600 people packed the little gym.
"It was great," Duke's Vicki Krapohl said. "I haven't seen a packed gym in a while."
Duke faces Iowa in the tournament on Sunday.
