BLUE DEVILS NOTCH NO. 2 SEED IN NCAA TOURNAMENT
The second-ranked Duke women's lacrosse team will open the 2001 NCAA

are seeded second overall behind top-ranked Maryland, while Temple is seeded
15th. Match time is set for 3:00 PM on Thursday in Koskinen Stadium.

Duke enters NCAA action with its best record in the history of the program, 14-3, and is seeded the highest in Blue Devil history. Temple won the Atlantic 10 title 10-9 over Duquesne in overtime to advance to NCAA action.
The winner of the Duke/Temple match will face the winner of the 10th-seeded William & Mary/seventh-seeded Loyola (Md.) match on Sunday.
DUKE IN THE NCAAS
The Blue Devils are making their fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA
Tournament and its fourth overall appearance since Duke began women's
lacrosse in 1996. In Duke's first trip in 1997, the Blue Devils lost in the
first round to Temple (17-11). In 1999, Duke received a bye in the first
round and then defeated James Madison (11-10) to advance to the Final Four.
Virginia defeated the Blue Devils 9-8 to knock Duke out in the semifinals.
Last year, Duke downed Dartmouth (7-6) in the first round, but fell 9-8 in
three overtimes to Princeton in the quarterfinals.
Overall Duke is 2-3 in NCAA Tournament play.
THE REVENGE FACTOR
The only other time Duke and Temple have met was in 1998 in the first round
of the NCAA Tournament. Temple defeated Duke 17-11 to knock the Blue Devils
out of the NCAA Tournament.
This match marked the first appearance for the Blue Devils in NCAA action.
DUKE NOTCHES FIRST ACC TOURNAMENT VICTORY EVER
The fourth-ranked Duke Blue Devils (12-2) won its first ACC Tournament game
ever on Friday afternoon at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex. Duke
defeated North Carolina 10-5 behind five Kate Kaiser goals and eight saves
from Kristen Foster. It was the Blue Devils' second victory over the Tar
Heels this season, as Duke edged North Carolina 10-9 in Durham on March 17.
While North Carolina held strong and made a late rally, this one would not
come down to the last shot, as Kaiser tied her career-high with the five
goals. Five other different Blue Devils scored a goal, and Kate Soulier
notched two assists.
The Blue Devils advanced to face top-ranked Maryland in the ACC Championship game, and Duke opened up a 2-0 lead to start the game behind goals from Kaiser and Soulier. But Maryland's combination of Jen Adams and Quinn Carney tallied eights goals and two assists, as the Terps held off each Duke rally to win 15-12 and hand Duke its only loss of the season when scoring the game's first goal.
NOTING THE BLUE DEVILS
Duke recorded its best ACC record in school history behind strong offensive
and defensive play. The Blue Devils could set a program record for fewest
goals allowed, which currently stands at 134 (1997 and 2000). To date, they
have allowed only 118 goals.
FOSTER EARNS NATIONAL RECOGNITION FROM THE CAGE
Duke goalie Kristen Foster had the biggest shoes of the season to fill in
trying to replace Shannon Chaney from last year's team. Foster was more
than ready for the challenge, leading the Blue Devils with 147 saves and
only 116 goals against. Her .559 save percentage ranks first in the ACC and
18th in the country . Her goals against average of 6.82 is also first in
the ACC and seventh in the country.
The junior native of Ellicott City, Maryland was named the Warrior/Inside Lacrosse National Player of the Week on April 30 after posting two one-goal victories over James Madison and Dartmouth. She stopped a free position shot in overtime against James Madison and a point-blank shot with eight minutes remaining against Dartmouth to preserve the victories. Foster was also named ACC Player of the Week on March 27.
IN THE RANKINGS
The Blue Devils' current ranking of No. 2 equals the program's highest
ranking ever. Duke has been ranked no lower than No. 5 this season, and all
but four weeks have been spent at No. 4. The ACC continues to dominate the
rankings with all four teams in the top seven in the nation.
HIGH SCORING DEVILS
After 17 matches, seven different Blue Devils have scored 10 goals or more
(Lauren Gallagher, Kate Kaiser, Kelly Dirks, Claire Finn, Claire Sullivan,
Courtney Rodgers and Kate Soulier). Duke has outscored its opponents
202-118 through 17 contests, giving it a scoring margin of +4.94.
Kaiser leads the team with 43 goals, and she is tied with Gallagher for the
team lead in points with 51.
ABOUT THE BLUE DEVILS
The Duke women's lacrosse team is once again having an excellent season and
enters the 2001 NCAA Tournament final with its best record in Duke history
at this point in the season at 14-3.
The 1999 season was a breakout year for the Blue Devils as they advanced to the NCAA Final Four for the first time in school history and set a school record with 13 victories. In 2000 the Blue Devils did not let down winning, 11 matches and knocking off seven ranked teams (#23 Virginia Tech, #18 Vanderbilt, #6 Georgetown, #5 North Carolina, #20 William & Mary, #14 Yale, and #2 Dartmouth).
Duke began last season winning seven of their first nine matches and were ranked #3 in the nation, but then lost to eighth-ranked Virginia (10-8), sixth-ranked North Carolina (7-6), and seventh-ranked James Madison (16-14) down the stretch. The Blue Devils rebounded to defeat second-ranked Dartmouth 11-8 to conclude the regular season, and then returned to Durham to again defeat Dartmouth in the first round of the NCAA's 7-6. The Blue Devils concluded their season with a NCAA quarterfinal loss at Princeton, as the Tigers outlasted the Blue Devils in triple-overtime to win 10-9 and advance to the Final Four.
The 2001 Duke team overcame two early losses before it went on a hot streak. After opening the season with a victory against Virginia Tech, Duke traveled to top-ranked Maryland without the services of Meghan Walters (broken wrist), and the Terps dominated Duke 18-11. Duke rebounded to win two games, but once again fell to fourth-ranked Princeton 10-7. From there, the Blue Devils have never looked back, notching a school record nine straight victories. After squeaking by second-ranked Georgetown, Duke defeated several ranked teams, including seventh-ranked Yale. The Blue Devils resorted to their defensive game, holding Yale to just two goals. After falling to top-ranked Maryland in the ACC Championship game, the Blue Devils responded with two close victories over highly-ranked opponents, squeaking by James Madison in overtime and Dartmouth by a goal.
HEAD COACH KERSTIN KIMEL
Named the ACC Coach of the Year in 1998 and Co-ACC Coach of the Year in
2000, Kerstin Kimel is currently in her sixth year at the helm of the Blue
Devil program and her seventh as a collegiate head coach. She owns a 59-41
record during her Duke career and a 63-49 mark overall.
After beginning the Duke program in 1996 and recording 11 wins in the first two seasons, Kimel has sparked the Blue Devils to 33 victories over the last three seasons and three trips to the NCAA Tournament. Her 1999 squad advanced to the NCAA Final Four for the first time in the school history. In 2000 Duke was never ranked lower than No. 8 in the nation.
The 2001 year has been just as kind to Kimel's Blue Devils, as Duke has not fallen below No. 5 in the national rankings.
Prior to joining the Duke staff, Kimel served as the head coach at Davidson for one season. A native of Havertown, Pa., Kimel was a two-time All-America at Maryland and led the Terrapins to four consecutive Final Four appearances as well as the 1992 NCAA National Championship. A 1992 NCAA All-Tournament Team selection, she was named the 1993 National Defensive Player of the Year. She graduated from Maryland in 1993.
STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE
Duke has once again scheduled the highest competition in their 2001
campaign, already having faced 13 ranked opponents, nine of which have been
in the top 10. Duke is 10-3 against ranked opponents this season, with its
only three losses coming against top-ranked Maryland (twice) and then-No. 4
Princeton.
FROM THE LAND DOWN UNDER
Sophomore attacker Meg Barnet has made a long trip to be with the Blue Devil
program, as she calls Adelaide, Australia home. But it has been worth it
for Duke and Barnet, as she has come off the bench in every game with
significant minutes. She has scored eight goals and assisted on five others
for the Blue Devils in the 17 contests.
IRON DUKES
So far this season, nine Duke players have started all 17 matches- Lauren
Gallagher, Kate Kaiser, Kelly Dirks, Claire Finn, Claire Sullivan, Kate
Soulier, Courtney Rodgers, Kristen Foster, and Amy Noble.

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN
The captains of the 2001 Duke women's lacrosse team are Barbara Preston and
Kate Soulier.
STREAKING BLUE DEVILS
With its victory over North Carolina on in the ACC semifinals, Duke's win
streak reached a new program high at nine games. That streak included seven
wins over ranked opponents, including No. 2 Georgetown, No. 9 Virginia, No.
7 Yale, and No. 6 North Carolina.
DOUBLE THE PLEASURE
The Kate-Kate and Claire-Claire combinations have yielded some impressive
numbers for the Blue Devils this season. Kate (Kaiser) and Kate (Soulier)
have combined for 55 goals and 18 assists, while Claire (Finn) and Claire
(Sullivan) have tallied 28 goals and 10 assists.
THE CENTURY CLUB
Three current Blue Devils are in the century club with 100 points or more in
their careers. Kate Soulier stands atop active players with 144 points.
Kate Kaiser's five-goal, seven-point performance against Virginia added her
to the 100-point list, and she now has 123 points. Kelly Dirks became the
most recent member of the club, notching her 100th point against Notre Dame
with a goal to begin to second half. She currently has 108 points. The
only other Blue Devil to reach 100 points is Tricia Martin, who stands at
the seemingly unapproachable total of 236 points.
KAISER ROLL
Kate Kaiser is on a roll, scoring 30 goals in her last nine contests, and
now leading the Blue Devils in goals scored with 43. She has recorded three
five-goal games and three four-goal games. Her three game-winning goals
were all against ranked opponents.
GALS, GALS, GALS
Lauren Gallagher has been one of the most productive Blue Devils on the
field this season. Of her 37 goals, she leads the team with five
game-winners. She leads the team in multi-goal games with 13 in the Blue
Devils' 17 contests. In addition to being the only Blue Devil player to
score in every match this season, she also tallied a point in all but one of
her 34-match career.
THE HALFTIME ADVANTAGE
Duke is undefeated this season when leading at the halftime break,
maintaining a perfect 13-0 when either leading or tied at the half. The
Blue Devils are also 9-1 when scoring the first goal of the contest.
KAISER, SOULIER STREAK IN NCAA ACTION
Senior Kate Soulier and junior Kate Kaiser have both scored in every NCAA
tournament match in which they have played. Soulier and Kaiser have each
scored seven goals in tournament action. Soulier has also added four
assists for 11 points in five contests.
