DURHAM, N.C. - The second-ranked Duke women's lacrosse team earned its fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament bid on Sunday and will battle Temple University on Thursday, May 10 in Durham, N.C. at 3:00 PM. Duke is seeded second, which is the highest the Blue Devils have ever been seeded in NCAA action, while Temple is seeded 15th.
"We are very excited and I think the No. 2 seed is a reflection of how we have played all season long," said Duke head coach Kerstin Kimel. "We look forward to playing Temple on Thursday and will try to do the same things that have gotten us to where we are now."
Other matchups in the first round on Thursday include-- (16) Monmouth at (1) Maryland - 4:00 PM, (9) James Madison at #8 Virginia - 4:00 PM, (13) Penn State at (4) Dartmouth - 4:00 PM, (12) Cornell at (5) Princeton - 3:00 PM, (10) William & Mary at Loyola - 4:00 PM, (14) Hofstra at #3 Georgetown - 4:00 PM, and (11) Syracuse at #6 North Carolina - 4:00 PM.
The winner of the Duke/Temple game will take on the winner of the William & Mary/Loyola match on Sunday.
Duke enters NCAA Tournament action with its best record in the history of the program, 14-3, and have won 11 of the last 12 games. Leading the charge for the Blue Devils are junior All-American Kate Kaiser and sophomore Lauren Gallagher. Both lead the team with 51 points and have scored 80 of Duke's 202 goals scored this season.
Temple defeated Duquesne, 10-9, on Saturday in the Atlantic 10 Championship game to earn the NCAA bid. The Owls enter NCAA action with a 13-5 record.
The only time Temple and Duke have met was in 1998 when the Owls defeated the Blue Devils, 17-11, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. It was the first time Duke had appeared in NCAA Tournament action and was played at Temple.
All 16 teams will be striving for the chance to advance to the NCAA Final Four on May 19 & 20 at Johns Hopkins University located in Baltimore, Md.
