Duke Holds on For 9-8 Victory Over Dartmouth

DURHAM, N.C. -- Senior day belonged to the Blue Devil youngsters, as the
freshmen, sophomores, and juniors contributed eight of Duke's nine goals in
the Blue Devils regular season finale. The second-ranked Blue Devils
survived a second-half comeback by the sixth-ranked Dartmouth Big Green
(12-2) to salvage a 9-8 victory in Koskinen Stadium. Three Blue Devils
(13-3) tallied three points a piece, as Duke used a 7-2 halftime advantage
to close out the regular season with an exciting victory.
The game did not look to be a close one early on, as junior midfielder Kate Kaiser (Cockeysville, Md.) opened the scoring less than a minute into the game. Duke got the next two goals as well, as senior attacker Kate Soulier (Chadds Ford, Pa.) and junior attacker Kelly Dirks (Annapolis, Md.) each tallied a goal and an assist in a six minute span to give the Blue Devils the early 3-0 lead. Amy Zimmer put the Big Green on the scoreboard at the 16:46 mark, but Kaiser scored the first of three more Duke goals, and the Blue Devils pushed the lead to 6-1 with 13 minutes remaining in the first half.
Freshman midfielder Lauren Kickham (Ellicott City, Md.) attempted to pass the ball from behind the cage, but Dartmouth goalie Sarah Hughes inadvertently knocked the pass into her own net to give Kickham her fifth goal on the year. The teams exchanged goals to end the first half with the Blue Devils outplaying the Big Green to a 7-2 lead.
Things seemed be going well for Duke at the beginning of the second half as sophomore midfielder Lauren Gallagher (West Chester, Pa.) notched her second goal of the game just 21 seconds into the half to give Duke its biggest lead of the game at 8-2. But Dartmouth struck back with five consecutive goals in a 17 minute span, as Duke was unable to muster anything on the offensive end. Zimmer and Jen Newitt each added their second goal of the game for Dartmouth during the span, and Kate Killen cut the lead to 8-7 at the 11:43 mark after receiving a feed from Newitt and rifling a quick shot past Duke goalie Kristen Foster (Ellicott City, Md.)
But Foster got her revenge at the 8:10 mark when she stopped a point-blank attempt by Suzy Gibbons to preserve the Duke lead, also allowing the Blue Devils to race down the field and counterattack. Kaiser found the back of the cage for her game-high third goal on the day and her team-leading 43rd goal of the year. A Lana Smith goal with 5:20 remaining proved to be the final tally of the game, as the Blue Devils held on to edge the co-champions of the Ivy League 9-8.
The second-ranked Blue Devils will spend the week training before they find out their NCAA first round opponent on the NCAA selection show on Sunday, May 6. With its number two ranking in the IWLCA polls, Duke hopes to host a first round game on Thursday, May 10. Dartmouth travels to top-ranked Maryland on Friday.
