HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Sophomore Lauren Gallagher's goal with 18 seconds left in the fourth overtime lifted second-ranked Duke (13-3) to a 7-6 win over 11th-ranked James Madison (10-7) in women's lacrosse Thursday afternoon.
With the game tied 6-6 at the end of regulation, the teams played six minutes of scoreless overtime before three-minute sudden-victory overtime periods began. Duke had three shots in the initial six minutes, two of those were saved by JMU senior goalkeeper Jennifer Corradini and the third sailed wide of the goal.
In the first sudden-victory period, Corradini and Duke goalkeeper Kristen Foster each stopped a shot.
In the second sudden-victory session, Corradini stopped two Duke shots, and JMU got possession. JMU senior Michelle Zurfluh's attempt with 27 seconds remaining was wide, and an apparent goal by JMU sophomore Lisa Staedt with 13 seconds left was called back because the referee whistled a foul on Duke just before Staedt released the ball. Staedt's ensuing free-position shot was saved by Foster.
Zurfluh's high shot late in the third sudden-victory period deflected off the top of Foster's stick, and Duke got possession of the ball, setting up Gallagher's game-winning shot.
Duke opened the game by taking a 3-0 lead in the first 2:51 of play. However, JMU scored the game's next three goals in a span of slightly less than 10 minutes to tie the contest at 3-3 with 12:52 left. JMU freshman Gail Decker then netted a free-position goal as time expired to give the Dukes a 4-3 halftime advantage.
Gallagher passed to Kelly Dirks for a goal just 35 seconds into the second period to tie the game at 4-4, and Duke's Courtney Rogers scored on a free-position attempt with 20:51 remaining to give the Blue Devils a 5-4 lead.
Senior Mindy Leher fed junior McNevin Molloy, who scored to tie the game at 5-5 with 5:22 left to play. Duke regained the lead on a Kate Kaiser goal with 2:47 remaining. Then Zurfluh forced overtime when she took a pass from Molloy and scored with 1:35 left.
Gallagher, Dirks and Kaiser each scored twice for Duke, which also got a goal from Courtney Rodgers. Molloy and Zurfluh had two goals apiece, and Staedt and Decker each scored one goal for JMU.
Duke held a 32-21 advantage on shots on goal. Corradini made 15 saves, and Foster stopped 10 shots.
