LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - The fourth-ranked Duke women's lacrosse team fell 15-12 to top-ranked Maryland in the ACC Championship game Sunday, ending the program's longest winning streak at nine games. It was Maryland's third consecutive ACC Championship, and its fourth in the last five years.
Duke (12-3) opened up the scoring at the 27:54 mark when Kate Kaiser (Cockeysville, Md.) found the back of the net on a free position shot. The Blue Devils extended the lead to 2-0 just one minute later when Kate Soulier (Chadds Ford, Pa.) took a feed from Lauren Gallagher (West Chester, Pa.) and rifled a shot past Maryland goalie Alexis Venechanos.
But Maryland (15-0) tallied the next three goals, two on free position shots, as Maryland overtook Duke nine minutes into the half. Junior midfielder Claire Sullivan (Washington, D.C.) notched her first of three goals on the day at 19:26 to even the score at 3-3, the final time the match would be tied. Maryland then scored five of the last six goals of the half, taking a commanding 8-4 lead into the break. The Blue Devils played a physical first half, totaling 13 fouls to Maryland's seven. Possession was a key to the Maryland lead, as the Terps had nine draw controls to Duke's four.
The second half did not open up much better for the Blue Devils, as the Terps scored three of the first five goals of the half, leading 11-6 at 20:56 after Jen Adams scored one of her game-high five goals. Sophomore midfielder Meg Barnet (S. Adelaide, Australia) brought the Devils closer with another free position goal, but Allison Comito tallied an unassisted goal to push the lead back up to 12-7 with 17:12 remaining.
Duke then went on one of its patented scoring runs, tallying three goals in four minutes behind two goals and an assist from Gallagher. But with the game at 12-10, Duke was unable to find the back of the cage, as Venechanos came up with several big saves. Maryland's Quinn Carney and Kelly Coppedge each scored to again put the lead to four goals with 6:11 remaining. Carney earned MVP honors for the tournament with six goals and two assists in two games.
The Duke fans in attendance were rejuvenated when Kelly Dirks (Annapolis, Md.) cut the lead back to three with 4:45 left to play, but Duke was once again unable to bring the game closer. The teams exchanged goals in the last three minutes, and Maryland came away with the 15-12 victory.
Duke named three players to the All-Tournament team, including Soulier, Sullivan, and Gallagher. Maryland led the way with five players on the team (Adams, Tori Wellington, Courtney Martinez, Meg McNamara, and Carney). North Carolina (Andy Fortino, Jazmine Norton) and Virginia (Lauren Aumiller and Lauri Kenis) each placed two student-athletes to the team.
The fourth-ranked Blue Devils return to action on Thursday when they travel to 12th-ranked James Madison. Game time is set for 4:00 PM.
