WASHINGTON, D.C. (Mar. 25) -- Sophomore attacker Lauren Gallagher led Duke with three goals and two assists as Duke defeated Georgetown 8-7 in Washington, D.C. The loss marks the fourth consecutive by the Hoyas to the Blue Devils and drops Georgetown to 2-4 all-time against Duke.
Duke took a 1-0 advantage on midfielder Kate Souliers' shot 6:30 into the game. GU responded with back-to-back goals by Sarah Oglesby and Sheehan Stanwick taking a one goal lead with 20:41 remaining in the first half. The Blue Devils Kate Soulier added another goal at 18:51 while senior Courtney Rodgers regained the lead for Duke at 14:02. With just one minute remaining in the half, Georgetown's Anouk Peters shot one past the Blue Devils netminder recording her first goal of the game tying the contest at 3-3.
Goals by Lauren Gallagher and Cheryl Lynn Horton in the opening 10 minutes of the second half staked the Blue Devils to 5-3 lead. GU trimmed the lead to one when Sheehan Stanwick found junior Erin Elbe in front of the net who reached the back of the net on her shot. One minute and nine seconds later the Hoyas tied the game at 5-5 as sophomore Wick Stanwick got her first goal of the game. Duke reclaimed the lead at 10:57 on a shot by Lauren Gallagher but held it just 48 seconds as the Hoyas Anouk Peters recorded her second goal of the day with 10:09 remaining. The Blue Devils scored two more times, once at 8:45 by Lauren Gallagher and the second by Kelly Dirks with 4:14 remaining in the contest. Georgetown failed to gather in the draws as Duke continued to run down the clock. The Hoyas had one last burst with Melissa Ellers scoring with :27 remaining but Duke won the draw ending Georgetown's 13-game home winning streak.
Netminder Kristen Foster had six saves for Duke while Georgetown's Bowen Holden posted 10 saves. The teams pulled equal on draws 8-8. Duke held a 21-18 advantage on shots.
Duke improves to 4-1 and will meet John's Hopkins in Baltimore on March 25 (3 p.m.).
