WASHINGTON D.C. (Mar. 2) - Duke's Chris Hartofilis and Kate Kaiser have been named finalists for the Tewaaraton Trophy which will be presented for the first time this year to the top men's and women's collegiate lacrosse players in the nation.
The University Club of Washington, D.C., in conjunction with the Tewaaraton Award Foundation, announced the establishment of the Tewaaraton Trophy along with the 30 men's and women's finalists. Scholarship money will be given to the award recipient’s college or university general scholarship fund.
Hartofilis, a senior midfielder from Huntington, N.Y., currently leads Duke in scoring with six points on three goals and three assists through two games. A preseason All-America pick in 2001, Hartofilis helped the Blue Devils to an 11-5 record last season by finishing sixth on the team in scoring with 15 goals and six assists for 21 points.
Kaiser, a junior attacker from Cockeysville, Md., tallied a team-best 41 goals last season en route to earning First Team All-America honors from both the IWLCA and USLacrosse. Already third among Duke's career goal scorers, Kaiser has scored 67 goals in just 36 career contests and pushed her streak of consecutive games with at least one goal to 25 with a goal in Duke's season-opening 14-2 win over Virginia Tech this past Tuesday.
The seventh-ranked Blue Devil men's team travels to face sixth-ranked Maryland on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. while Duke's women's squad, ranked fourth nationally, is on the road to meet top-ranked Maryland tonight at 7:00 p.m.
The five finalists will be announced on May 1, 2001. The inaugural Tewaaraton Trophy will be presented at The University Club of Washington, D.C., on June 7, 2001 at a banquet honoring the finalists and winners.
