THE GAME: Duke takes to the road for its ACC opener against Maryland ... Both teams are 2-0 on the young season and ranked nationally, with Duke checking in at number seven and Maryland one spot ahead.
THE SERIES: Maryland leads the all-time series over the Blue Devils, 48-9 ... Under 11th-year head coach Mike Pressler, Duke has compiled a 6-9 record against the Terrapins including wins in four of the last six meetings.
AFTER MARYLAND: The Blue Devils will return home to host Sacred Heart on March 6 at 3:00 p.m.
VERSUS RANKED TEAMS: A year ago, Duke went 10-4 against teams ranked among the nation’s top 20 at the time of the contest.
CLOSE GAMES: The Blue Devils lost five games in 2000, with four of the losses coming by one goal ... On the flip side, when Duke made its run to the ACC Tournament title and berth in the NCAA Final Four in 1997, the Blue Devils went 6-2 in contests decided by one goal.
LAST TIME OUT: Last Sunday, Chris Hartofilis registered two goals and three assists and Matt Breslin recorded 14 saves to lead seventh-ranked Duke to a 12-4 win over visiting Butler University ... The win marked the 100th victory for head coach Mike Pressler at Duke ... After Butler went ahead 1-0, Duke's Hunter Henry scored back-to-back goals for a 2-1 Blue Devil advantage ... Hartofilis then tallied a goal and assisted on a score by Dan Doty as Duke took a 4-1 lead at the end of the first period ... In the second quarter, Hartofilis and Kevin Brennan found the back of the net for Duke while Butler countered with scores from Ryan Ward and Doug Patterson ... Duke's Alex Lieske opened the second half scoring with a goal from Terrence Keaney at the 10:54 mark before Keaney scored an unassisted goal just over a minute later to give Duke an 8-3 lead ... Butler's Adam Cichostepski scored with just under four minutes remaining in the period to cut the lead to 8-4 ... The fourth quarter belonged to the Blue Devils as Breslin made six of his 14 saves in the period ... Mack Hardaker scored twice during the quarter and Hartofilis picked up two more assists as Duke outscored the Bulldogs, 4-0, in the quarter.
SCOUTING MARYLAND: The sixth-ranked Terrapins earned wins over Air Force (16-3) and Denver (10-7) last weekend ... Freshman Dan LaMonica leads Maryland in scoring with nine points on four goals and five assists, while senior Andrew Combs has recorded a team-leading eight goals through two games ... In goal, senior Pat McGinnis carded 15 saves over the weekend and owns a 5.11 goals against average ... Maryland is coached by Dick Edell, who has guided the Terrapins to 160 wins, three ACC Championships and 12 NCAA Tournament appearances in 18-plus seasons.
LAST YEAR AGAINST MARYLAND: The Blue Devils and Terrapins split a pair of games in 2000, with both contests being decided by one goal ... On March 5 in Durham, fourth-ranked Duke downed eighth-ranked Maryland, 9-8, as T.J. Durnan scored the game-winning goal late in the fourth period ... Jared Frood paced the Blue Devils with three goals and two assists, while Marcus LaChapelle had three goals and an assist for the Terrapins ... On April 21 in College Park, Maryland Brian Zeller scored two goals as the ninth-ranked Terrapins defeated the sixth-ranked Blue Devils in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament, 7-6 ... Durnan and Nick Hartofilis tallied two goals apiece for Duke.
PRESSLER REACHES 100 WINS AT DUKE: Duke head coach Mike Pressler picked up his 100th victory during his tenure with the Blue Devils in last week’s 12-4 win over Butler ... Pressler, in his 11th season at Duke, holds a record of 100-49 with the Blue Devils.
ALL-TIME RECORD: Duke’s all-time lacrosse record stands at 343-330-1.
TEAM CAPTAINS: As elected by their teammates, Matt Breslin, Scott Bross, Hunter Henry and Michael Keating will serve as team captains for the 2001 campaign.
HENRY STAYS HOT: After scoring his only two goals of the 2000 season in the NCAA Tournament season-ending loss to Virginia, Hunter Henry has carried his scoring prowess into the 2001 campaign ... The senior from Durham, N.C., has three goals and one assist through two games to give him five goals and an assist in his last three outings dating back to last year.
LIESKE RETURNS TO FORM: A year ago, Alex Lieske compiled one goal and three assists in Duke’s first five games before being lost for the year with an injury ... Thus far in 2001, the Timonium, Md., product has three goals and three assists.
THE FACE-OFF FACTOR: The Blue Devils have gotten off on the right foot with their face-offs in their first two games of the year ... Scott Bross, Kevin Cassese and Jamie Kennedy have spearheaded the efforts as Duke has won 27-of-39 (.692) face-offs ... Bross has won 69.0 percent (20-of-29) of his face-off opportunities this season ... A year ago, the Blue Devils finished second nationally in team face-off percentage (.643) and Bross placed second individually (.651) behind Chris Cercy of Syracuse (.711).
EXTRA MAN OFFENSE: After finishing either first or second nationally with its Extra Man Offense in each of the past two seasons, Duke is four-for-eight (.500) with a man advantage on the year ... Last year, Duke scored on 45.1 percent (32-of-71) of its man-up situations to place second only to Villanova (.517).
BRESLIN STEADY IN SEASON-OPENING WINS: Senior goalkeeper Matt Breslin kicked off his third year as a starter for the Blue Devils by registering 11 and 14 saves, respectively, in Duke’s pair of wins last week ... The preseason All-America pick finished seventh in the country a year ago with his 8.3 goals against average.
ACC OPENERS: Under head coach Mike Pressler, Duke is 4-6 in ACC regular season openers ... All 10 of the league lid-lifters in the Pressler Era have come against Maryland.
COMING HOME: Seven Blue Devils hail from the state of Maryland — Scott Bross (Elliott City), Bill Gerrish (Chevy Chase), Dan Hauber (Gaithersburg), Alex Lieske (Timonium), Greg Patchak (Timonium), Patrick O’Neill (Bethesda) and Michael Satyshur (Baltimore).
LOOKING FOR DOUBLE FIGURES: In 2001, Duke will look to reach double figures in the win column for the fifth straight season and seventh time in the last eight years ... The school record for victories in a season is 13 established in 1999.
PRESEASON HONORS: Scott Bross and Stuart Schwartz of Duke have been named to the preseason All-America second team by Face-Off Yearbook, leading six total Blue Devil selections ... Joining Bross and Schwartz are Matt Breslin (3rd Team), Chris Hartofilis (3rd Team), Greg Patchak (3rd Team) and Michael Keating (Honorable mention).
PRESEASON POLL: Duke has been picked seventh in the national preseason rankings by Face-Off Yearbook ... Defending national champion Syracuse is picked to defend its national title by the publication as the Orangemen look to reach their 19th consecutive Final Four in 2001 ... Princeton is picked second, followed by Virginia, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, Loyola, Duke, Maryland, Hofstra and North Carolina ... The Blue Devils will square off against six of the top-10 ranked teams in Maryland (March 4), Loyola (March 10), North Carolina (March 21), Georgetown (March 25), Virginia (April 14) and Hofstra (April 28) ... In addition, Duke will meet two other teams ranked in the top-25 in No. 15 Brown (March 17) and No. 20 Harvard (March 31).
2000 IN REVIEW: With their 11-5 overall record, the Blue Devils reached double figures in the win column for the fourth consecutive campaign ... Duke appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the seventh time in the Mike Pressler Era, and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals for the fifth time in school history after winning its first-round game over Hobart ... Duke made its fourth straight and seventh overall appearance in the NCAA Tournament ... Led by First Team selection Stephen Card, Duke had four players named USILA/STX All-America ... Nick Hartofilis was tabbed to the second unit while T.J. Durnan and Jared Frood garnered third team and honorable mention honors, respectively ... Durnan and Frood also were named to the USILA Scholar All-America team.
DUKE COACHING STAFF: Duke head coach Mike Pressler is in his 11th season at the helm of the Blue Devil lacrosse program ... A native of Wilton, Conn., Pressler holds a record of 100-49 (.667) at Duke and an overall head coaching ledger of 176-69 (.716) ... Prior to coming to Duke, the 1982 Washington & Lee graduate made coaching stops at Hampden-Sydney (1982; assistant coach), VMI (1983; head coach), Army (1984-85; assistant coach), and Ohio Wesleyan (1986-90; head coach) ... In January, Pressler was named one of three assistant coaches for the Team USA team which will play in the 2002 Lacrosse World Championships in Perth, Australia ... Joe Alberici, a 1991 graduate of Alfred University, is in his fifth season with the Blue Devils and serves as the associate head coach while Jim Gonnella, a former Duke All-America who graduated in 1997, is in his second season as an assistant coach.
