AUBURN, ALA. -After day one of action at the 2001 Auburn Tiger-Derby Invitational, the fourth-ranked Duke women's golf team is in tied for third place with a 301. The Blue Devils shot a 13-over-par on Friday and trail Tennessee (294) and Georgia (297), while being tied with Pepperdine.
Duke was led by junior Kristina Engstrom (Djursholm, Sweden) and freshman Niloufar Aazam-Zanganeh (Lausanne, Switzerland) who each carded a 73 on Friday. Engstrom had a very up and down first nine recording three birdies and three bogies as she turned even par, before surrendering one final bogey on the final nine. Aazam-Zanganeh turned at one-over-par (37) before notching a bogey on hole 12, but birdied number 17 to finish in tied for sixth individually along with Engstrom.
Sophomore Virada Nirapathpongporn (Bangkok, Thailand) had a consistent first round carding 15 pars, but two bogies and a double-bogey on hole nine led to a four-over-par 76 Friday, which is tied for 21st individually. Sophomore Leigh Anne Hardin (Martinsville, Ind.) and junior Maria Garcia-Estrada (Tenerife, Spain) each finished with a 79 and 81, respectively.
Once again, Duke was hurt by three double-bogies and one triple bogey on the afternoon, while carding only five birdies as a team. The final two rounds will be played Saturday and Sunday at the Par 72, 6,234-yard Auburn University Club.
