Erin Engelhardt scored on a breakaway goal 4:41 into the first overtime to lift No. 2 seed Virginia past No. 7 seed Duke, 2-1, in the second quarterfinal match of the 2001 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Soccer Championship in Winston-Salem, N.C., Thursday evening.
Virginia (14-3-1) advances to play No. 3 seed Florida State at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. The Seminoles defeated Maryland, 7-2 in game one of the championship. Duke (8-9) must now wait to see if it will earn a bid to the 2001 NCAA Tournament.
The Cavaliers dominated the first half, generating better scoring chances while out shooting the Blue Devils, 8-3. First-team All-ACC goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir made several key saves to keep the Blue Devils in the match, as Virginia out shot Duke, 21-8.
Senior forward Sarah Pickens gave the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead at 48:56 intercepting a back pass intended for Virginia sophomore goalkeeper Jodi Clugston. Pickens beat a diving Clugston and shot into an empty net for her fourth goal of the season.
Virginia senior forward Lori Lindsey, the 2001 ACC Player of the Year, tied the game with her ninth goal of the season just 19 seconds later. Lindsey took a pass from teammate senior midfielder Laura Gaworecki from 12-yards out and one-timed a shot into the upper left-hand corner of the net.
