The Duke women's soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Women's College Cup after outscoring Tennessee, 4-2, on penalty kicks Friday night at Fetzer Field. The Blue Devils move on to face defending national champion and top-ranked North Carolina Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
The Blue Devils and the Lady Volunteers battled to a 1-1 tie after four scoreless sudden death overtime periods, leading to the penalty kick shootout.
"In the first half we played really well and went at Tennessee," said Duke head coach Robbie Church. "We had them on their heels a little bit, but they came back strong and played us tough. Thora's (Helgadottir) play was huge for us tonight, as it has been all season long. We've been working on penalty kicks for the past two weeks, and it really paid off for us tonight."
Tennessee scored just 8:22 into the match when junior forward Kim Patrick took a pass from midfielder Kayla Lockaby and arched a shot from the left side into the upper right corner of the goal.
The Lady Vols held the lead for over 60 minutes before Tennessee freshman midfielder Keeley Dowling was whistled for a hand ball in the box. Duke junior midfielder Carly Fuller converted on the penalty kick to tie the game.
Neither team scored for the last 81:17 minutes of the match, forcing penalty kicks. Duke converted on all four of its penalty kicks by sophomore goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir, senior midfielder Kasey Truman, freshman midfielder Casey McCluskey and Fuller. Helgadottir was the difference, saving two of the four Tennessee attempts.
"We've had bad luck in overtime this year, so it was nice to win this one," said Helgadottir. "We lost four overtime games this season and we played four tonight, so I guess now we're even."
Duke improved to 8-9-1 entering the second round of the tournament on Sunday against Carolina, who defeated UNC Greensboro, 3-0, in its first round match. Tennessee ended its season 11-6-1 after earning its first bid to the NCAA Tournament.
