Koskinen stadium, the home of Duke's men's & women's soccer and lacrosse teams, underwent a major field renovation over the summer. The university spent $200,000 to upgrade the field beginning on May 15 and the project was completed by the start of soccer season in late August.
The three main reasons for construction were to improve drainage, improve the field contour and to upgrade the underground irrigation system. The Carolina Green Corporation installed an ATF/Cambridge Sports Drainage System. Every seven square feet there is now a collector for water to move away from the field. They also installed certified Tifway Bermuda Grass Sprigs on the field, which resulted in approximately 1,800 bushels of sprigs that cover the playing surface.
Koskinen Stadium, considered one of the top multi-sport facilities in the country, was named and dedicated in 1999 through the support of John and Patricia Koskinen. From a spectator's standpoint, there's not a bad seat in the house as the aluminum bleachers flank each sideline to allow for 4,500 fans with standing room only areas pushing the capacity to approximately 7,000. The Bermuda grass playing surface is 75 yards by 120 yards with a specifically designed underground irrigation system that keeps it in top condition year round, while lights, added in 1984, have afforded the Blue Devils scheduling flexibility.
