DURHAM, N.C. - The members of the Duke University women's lacrosse team participated in the Flagrun on Wednesday morning as the Blue Devils ran 5.2 miles from Southern Franklin County to Wake Forest, N.C. The Flagrun is a demonstration of American resolve in support of the victim's families, employees of American and United Airlines, and Military Service members involved, lost in the September 11 attacks.
As part of the flag run, federal employees and other volunteers will carry a United States flag across the country. The goal of the run, which began on October 11, is to arrive in Los Angeles on Veteran's Day, November 11, 2001. The flag the runners are carrying was flown over Iraq in the cockpit of a U.S. F-16 in support of Operation Southern Watch on October 2, 2001.
"Being a part of the flagrun this morning was great," said Duke head coach Kerstin Kimel. "We finished our leg at 7:30 AM and they were very happy with us because when the flag got to us it was about 10-15 minutes behind schedule. We made up the time with ease and it was really fun being a part of the flagrun."
The flag will be carried around the clock to achieve its goal and all proceeds benefit selected charities in support of the victims of the tragedy on September 11, 2001.
