Fish replaces Doug Knotts, who was named an administrative assistant to Duke's football campaign in December.
"Coach Fish brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to our staff," Franks said. "He has the ability to work very well with people, and will be extremely helpful with the various administrative tasks involved with our football program."
A 1973 graduate of Gardner-Webb, Fish brings over 20 years of football coaching experience to Duke. As the head coach at his alma mater from 1984-96, Fish compiled an overall record of 73-70-1 with a pair of league titles. Fish guided the Runnin' Bulldogs to South Atlantic Conference championships in 1987 and 1992, with his 1992 club finishing 12-2 and as the national runner-up.
The South Atlantic Conference Coach-of-the-Year in 1987, Fish ranks third all-time in SAC history with his 41 league victories. He also coached 15 All-America selections during his tenure.
Fish got his start in football as an assistant coach at Pisgah High School from 1975-79 before serving as the head coach at Bessemer City High School from 1980-83. After his stint at Gardner-Webb, he worked in private business before serving as the head coach at Pisgah High School for the past two years.
Fish will begin his duties at Duke immediately.
