Gonnella, a current assistant coach with the Blue Devils, was named one of 18 "Assigned Players" and will play with the Fairfield, Conn., franchise. Other former Duke players taken in the draft were Steve Card (6th round, 31st overall, Rochester), Nick Hartofilis (6th round, 33rd overall, Baltimore), Dave Stilley (11th round, 65th overall, New Jersey), Jared Frood (13th round, 73rd overall, Connecticut), John Fay (14th round, 79th overall, Rochester), and Ed Fay (16th round, 91st overall, Rochester).
A native of Baldwinsville, N.Y., Gonnella was a two-time USILA All-America while at Duke and named the nation's top midfielder following his senior season in 1997. He finished his career ranking among Duke's all-time leaders in both points (145) and assists (90).
Card, a native of Princeton, N.J., finished his career at Duke this past spring and was a two-time All-America choice as a defender. Hartofilis, a Huntington, N.Y., product who also played football at Duke, closed out his career with the Blue Devil lacrosse program in 2000, registering 91 career points and garnering a pair of Second Team All-America citations.
Stilley, a native of Bryn Mawr, Pa., played at Duke from 1994-97, and was named First Team All-America in 1997. Frood, a native of Elbridge, N.Y., was a member of the Blue Devil program from 1997-2000, and ranks 10th on Duke's all-time scoring list with 178 points on 99 goals and 79 assists.
John Fay, a product of Canton, N.Y., lettered four seasons at Duke from 1995-98 and posted scoring totals of 198 points on 150 goals and 48 assists. The two-time All-America pick holds Blue Devil single-game (9) and single-season (53 in 1997) record for goals scored. Ed Fay, also of Canton, N.Y., played from 1995-97 and was a member of Duke's 1997 club which went 12-4 and advanced to the NCAA Final Four and named the Blue Devils' Most Improved Player in 1997 when he tallied 13 goals and eight assists.
