The Commodores (1-3) had lost six straight games dating back to last season but took advantage of Duke (0-4), a team they now have beaten four straight times in their series.
Vanderbilt could have beaten the Blue Devils even worse than they did.
They got inside the Duke 18 three times before stalling and settling for field goals of 29, 30 and 35 yards by Markham. He added his fourth, a career-best 52-yarder, at the beginning of the fourth.
Zolman converted Vandy's only two touchdowns when he hit Jared McGrath on a 13-yard TD pass at 9:16 in the second quarter. His 12-yarder to Dan Stricker with 35 seconds left in the quarter gave Vandy a 20-0 lead at halftime.
Zolman was 23-of-37 for 266 yards when he left in the fourth quarter. Dan Stricker had his third straight 100-yard receiving game as he caught 10 passes for 147 yards.
Duke, which scored just 13 points through its first three games, continued its offensive struggles with just 79 yards in the first half and finished with 229 total yards compared to 440 yards for Vandy.
The Blue Devils started off the game well. Spencer Romine drove the Blue Devils down the field on the opening drive only to be intercepted by Vandy cornerback Jimmy Williams in the end zone.
Duke avoided the shutout when Ryan Fowler intercepted a Benji Walker pass at the Duke 25 and returned it 37 yards to the Vanderbilt 38. Seven plays later, D. Bryant found Nic Hartofilis for a 26-yard TD pass with 6:34 remaining.
