Freshman forward Gwendolyn Oxenham (Gulf Breeze, Fla). started the scoring early for Duke as she netted her third goal of the year at 13:29 on an assist from Pickens and senior forward Alexis Highsmith (Hamden, Conn.) to give Duke an early 1-0 lead.
In the 16th minute, Pickens was pulled down in the box and Duke was awarded a penalty kick. Sophomore midfielder Carly Fuller (Tualatin, Ore.) beat South Carolina goalkeeper Elise Matthews to put Duke up 2-0.
Pickens scored her first goal of the game at 75:46 when she took a pass from Oxenham and chipped the ball over Matthews head to put Duke up 3-0. She netted her second goal of the game at 86:10 when she rebounded her own shot into the net. Duke added their fifth goal in the final minute of the game when Pickens crossed the ball and a South Carolina player knocked the ball into the back of the net for an own goal.
"Sarah made a great decision on her first goal to chip the ball over the keeper," said Duke head coach Bill Hempen. "The effort was there today and our defense once again did an outstanding job."
South Carolina's lone goal came in the 78th minute when junior midfielder Jordan McIntyre scored on an assist from senior forward Megan Gutstadt.
