Senior Jamie Brodsky scores game-high five goals
DURHAM, N.C. (May 6) -- The eighth-ranked Duke Blue Devils closed out the regular season with a convincing 29-4 victory over St. Andrews College at Koskinen Stadium on Saturday night. The win marked Duke's (10-4, 2-1 ACC) eighth 10-win season in program history. St. Andrews closed out their season with a 6-9 mark.
Duke's 29 goals also marked the most goals in a game since the Blue Devils defeated Guilford 41-8 on April 5, 1978.
Duke senior Jamie Brodsky (Lido Beach, N.Y.) scored a game-high five goals, doubling his career total. Senior T.J. Durnan (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) led all scorers with eight points on three goals and five assists. Another Blue Devil senior, Nick Schmitz (Rye, N.Y.) scored his first collegiate points with a goal and three assists. St. Andrews junior Michael Cann led the Knights with two goals.
Duke built an 8-1 lead in the first quarter and continued to build on that margin, shooting over 45 percent (29 of 64) for the game. Duke also dominated the face-offs, winning a season-high 29 of 36. The Blue Devils also picked up 58 ground balls to St. Andrews 27. Duke was successful on three of four extra-man opportunities, while limiting the Knights to just one extra-man goal on six attempts.
Duke used three goalkeepers in the contest, a first this season. Junior starter Matt Breslin (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) played the first half, recording two saves while allowing two goals. Sophomore A.J. Kincel (Palmyra, Va.) tallied three saves while allowing two goals, and freshman Michael Russell (Darien, Conn.), while playing in his first career game, had three saves and allowed no goals.
Duke will find out the status of its postseason plans on Sunday evening, when the 12-team bracket for the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship is announced at 7:30 p.m. on Home Team Sports.
