ABOUT THE BLUE DEVILS
The Duke women's lacrosse team is once again having an excellent season and enters the quarterfinals of the 2000
NCAA Tournament with an 11-5 mark.
Last season was a breakout year for the Blue Devils as they advanced to the NCAA Final Four for the first time in school history and set a school record with 13 victories. In 2000 the Blue Devils have not let down winning 11 matches and knocking off eight ranked opponents (No. 23 Virginia Tech, No. 18 Vanderbilt, No. 6 Georgetown, No. 5 North Carolina, No. 20 William & Mary, No. 14 Yale, and No. 2 Dartmouth twice).
Duke began the season winning seven of its first nine matches and were ranked #3 in the nation, but then lost to #8 Virginia (10-8), #6 North Carolina (7-6), and #7 James Madison (16-14) down the stretch. The Blue Devils rebounded to defeat #2 Dartmouth 11-8 to conclude the regular season.
SCOUTING PRINCETON
Princeton received a bye in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and are the No. 2 seed, while also being
ranked No. 2 in the nation.
The Tigers head into NCAA play losing two of their last three matches. Princeton lost to No. 9 Dartmouth (16-13 in OT) and No. 1 Maryland (14-6), before downing Brown 10-9 to conclude the regular season. This marks the 10th overall appearance in the NCAA tournament and eighth trip in the last nine years for Princeton. The Tigers own an 11-8 record in nine previous tournament appearances dating back to 1983.
Princeton boasts four players who have scored over 35 goals this season. Kim Smith (50), Lauren Simone (45), Julie Shaner (38), and Charlotte Kenworthy are the keys to the Tigers 12.44 goals per game average.
THE SERIES WITH PRINCETON
Duke and Princeton have met only three times since Duke began its women's lacrosse program in 1996. Princeton
leads the series 2-1 with both victories coming in Princeton, N.J. The first meeting came back 1998 with the
Tigers winning 16-12 at Princeton, but Duke rebounded the next year to win 11-8 in Durham, N.C. Princeton
came back this season and won 11-10 and knocked off the then No. 2 ranked Blue Devils.
Duke is winless in matches played at Princeton.
LAST TIME OUT...
The No. 7 ranked Duke women's lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA Tournament elite eight on Thursday
afternoon with a 7-6 victory over No. 10 ranked Dartmouth College in Durham, N.C.
Duke got on the board first less than two minutes into play as senior, Tricia Martin, found the back of the net. Dartmouth came back to even the match as Suzy Gibbons scored for The Big Green.
Junior Courtney Rodgers (Potomac, Md.) added another goal for Duke at the 21:02 mark (assist by Claire Sullivan), but Dartmouth went on a 3-0 run with goals by Jacque Weitzel, Kerry Lenehan, and Liz Merritt to put The Big Green up 4-2.
The Blue Devils did not let up as Kate Kaiser scored to ignite a four-goal rally for Duke to close out the first half. Adding goals for the Blue Devils were, Claire Finn (Newton, Ma.), Kate Soulier (Chadds Ford, Pa.), and Lauren Gallagher. Duke led 6-4 at the break.
Dartmouth came out in the second half as Lenehan netted her second goal of the match to cut the Blue Devil lead to 6-5 at the 24:14 mark. The Big Green connected again six minutes later to even the match off Weitzel's second goal on the day. Duke would not let down as Finn found the back of the net at the 13:49 mark, which proved to be the match-winning goal. With 12 seconds remaining in the match, Dartmouth's Alison Moulin had a free-position-shot to tie the match, but Duke's Shannon Chaney saved the shot to secure the win for the Blue Devils.
For the match Duke held Dartmouth to a season low six goals and it marks the lowest scoring output in the last 23 matches for The Big Green. Chaney was very impressive in goal for Duke recording eight saves on the afternoon.
The Blue Devils took 28 shots and The Big Green took 22. Dartmouth's Weitzel, the leading goal scorer in the nation (4.33), was held to two goals on the day.
