Blue Devils will travel to No. 2 Princeton May 14 at 1:00 PM
DURHAM, N.C. (May 11) -- The No. 7 ranked Duke women's lacrosse team advanced
to the NCAA Tournament elite eight on
Thursday afternoon with a 7-6 victory over No. 10 ranked Dartmouth
College in Durham, N.C. The Blue Devils will now travel
to No. 2 Princeton on Sunday at 1:00 PM.
Duke got on the board first less than two minutes into play as senior, Tricia Martin (Huntington, N.Y.), found the back of the net. Dartmouth came back to even the match as Suzy Gibbons scored for The Big Green.
Junior Courtney Rodgers (Potomac, Md.) added another goal for Duke at the 21:02 mark (assist by Claire Sullivan), but Dartmouth went on a 3-0 run with goals by Jacque Weitzel, Kerry Lenehan, and Liz Merritt to put The Big Green up 4-2.
The Blue Devils did not let up as Kate Kaiser (Cockeysville, Md.) scored to ignite a four-goal rally for Duke to close out the first half. Adding goals for the Blue Devils were, Claire Finn (Newton, Ma.), Kate Soulier (Chadds Ford, Pa.), and Lauren Gallagher (West Chester, Pa.). Duke led 6-4 at the break.
Dartmouth came out in the second half as Lenehan netted her second goal of the match to cut the Blue Devil lead to 6-5 at the 24:14 mark. The Big Green connected again six minutes later to even the match off Weitzel's second goal on the day.
Duke would not let down as Finn found the back of the net at the 13:49 mark, which proved to be the match-winning goal. With 12 seconds remaining in the match, Dartmouth's Alison Moulin had a free-position-shot to tie the match, but Duke's Shannon Chaney saved the shot to secure the win for the Blue Devils.
For the match Duke held Dartmouth to a season low six goals and it marks the lowest scoring output in the last 23 matches for The Big Green. Chaney was very impressive in goal for Duke recording eight saves on the afternoon. The Blue Devils took 28 shots and The Big Green took 22. Dartmouth's Weitzel, the leading goal scorer in the nation (4.33), was held to two goals on the day.
The Blue Devils are now undefeated in NCAA Tournament matches played at Koskinen Stadium. Last year Duke won 11-10 over James Madison to advance to the Final Four.
Duke improves to 11-5 and Dartmouth falls to 11-5.
