COLUMBUS, OHIO. (May 11) - The Duke women's golf team posted a first round 300 for tied for sixth place at the NCAA East Regional Thursday. The Blue Devils were led by freshman Maria Garcia-Estrada (Tenerife, Spain) and sophomore Beth Bauer (Cramerton, N.C.), who both carded rounds of 74 (+2) on the day. The Regional is being played at the par-72 University Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio.
Taking the first round lead was Purdue University, after recording a 295 (+7) with host Ohio State tied for second with Northwestern, Central Florida, and Michigan State, which all shot 299 (+11) on the day. Duke is tied with Florida, Tennessee, and North Carolina at tied for sixth (300, +12).
Other highlights for Duke on the day were junior Kalen Anderson (Edina, Minn.), who shot four over on the front nine (40) but came back to shoot one-under on the back (35) to finish with a 75 (+3). She is in tied for 22nd place with 12 other players. Freshman Kristina Engstrom (Djursholm, Sweden) finished the day with a 77 (+5) and is in tied for 52nd place.
Sophomore Candy Hannemann (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) struggled on day one turning in an 81 (+9). Leading the individual play is Marcy Newton, who fired a course tying record 67 today.
The second round of the 54-hole tournament will begin on Friday morning at 7:30 AM. The top 11 teams and three individuals from non-competing teams will advance to the NCAA Championships May 24-27 at the Sunriver Golf Course at the Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore. Duke will get things rolling on Friday with tee times at 11:50 AM with Hannemann, 12:00 PM Engstrom, 12:10 Anderson, 12:20 Bauer, and 12:30 PM with Garcia-Estrada.
