#8 Virginia Upsets #3 Women's Lacrosse, 10-8

Tricia Martin and Kelly Dirks each score three goals in loss

DURHAM, N.C. (April 8) -- The #8 ranked Virginia Cavaliers scored the final five goals of the match to defeat #3 Duke University 10-8 in women's lacrosse action in Durham, N.C. on Saturday. Virginia improves to 8-4, 1-2 ACC and Duke falls to 7-3, 1-2.

Duke jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the match, behind two Kelly Dirks (Annapolis, Md.) goals, but Virginia responded with four unanswered goals to cut the Duke lead to 5-4 with eight minutes remaining in the first half.

Dirks added another goal for Duke at the 5:44 mark before the break to give the Blue Devils a 6-4 lead heading into the break.

Virginia got on the board first in the second half behind a goal from Jill Hansen, but Duke responded with two straight goals by Tricia Martin (Huntington, N.Y.) to give the Blue Devils a commanding 8-5 lead with 16:21 remaining.

The Cavaliers would not give up as they responded with three straight goals by Amy Fromal, Mills Hook, and Stephy Samaras to even up the match at 8-8. Then, with 2:27 left UVA's Fromal connected on the go ahead goal off an assist from Kelly Allenbach. Virginia controlled the ball for the final two minutes holding Duke to no shots, while adding a match-clinching 10th goal with 40 seconds remaining by Allenbach.

Virginia's defense was key in the second half holding Duke to only three shots. For the game Duke committed 22 turnovers. Duke's losing streak against Virginia is now at eight matches.

Duke will next host Notre Dame on Thursday at 7:00 P.M. in Koskinen Stadium.
