Durham, NC (April 16) -- The #4 ranked Duke Blue Devils used an offensive explosion in the first half enroute to a season record 14 first half goals and a 17-4 victory over #14 ranked Yale Bulldogs. Duke improves to 9-3 on the year while Yale falls to 8-3. Yale started the first half strongly, scoring twice in the first 1:10 with goals by Amanda Walton and Kate Flatley on an assist from Katherine Myers.
Kate Kaiser scored two goals in less than a minute first to tie the game and then put Duke in the lead for good with 25:30 left in the first half. The two goals started a 5-0 Duke run, which lasted until the 13:07 mark when Heather Bentley scored the last Yale goal of the game. Duke finished the half with a 7-0 run, including goals in the last thirty seconds by Kaiser and a free-position shot by Meghan Walters with one second remaining on the clock, to give Duke a 14-4 halftime lead. Both offenses stalled a bit in the second half, with Duke shutting out Yale 3-0 to give the final score of 17-4.
Kaiser scored her final goal of the afternoon with 26:53 left in the game, bringing her day's total to five goals and moving her into a tie for second place for most goals scored in a single game. Kaiser was one goal away from tying teammate Tricia Martin's record of six goals in one game, set on two separate occasions.
Duke will travel to College Park, MD this weekend in search of its first ACC Tournament title.
