ATHENS, GA. (April 1) - The Duke University women's golf team fired a tournament-record 282 (10-under) on Saturday in the Liz Murphpy Collegiate Classic to increase their lead to 18 strokes over Louisiana State at the University of Georgia Golf Club.
Duke's own Beth Bauer (Cramerton, N.C.) continued her excellent play as she shot a one-under (72) to increase her two-day total to seven-under par. She leads the tournament by two strokes over Auburn's Danielle Downey. On Friday she fired a tournament and course record 67 in round one.
The Blue Devils (ranked No. 2 in the Sagarin/No. 2 in MasterCard Collegiate rankings) are in first place with a two-day total of 573 (11-under), while Louisiana State (591, +7), Georgia, Auburn (601, +17), and Wake Forest (603) round out the top five. "This is a much better feeling for a coach," Duke head coach Dan Brooks said,
"The scores are more spread out amongst the whole team. When everybody is doing well, it means a lot because you know that you are not depending on only one person."
Freshman Maria Garcia-Estrada (Tenerise, Spain) fired a collegiate best 68 in round two to move into tied for fourth place with teammate Kristina Engstrom (Djursholm, Sweden), who is three-under-par (143). Junior Kalen Anderson (Edina, Minn.)shot a three-under 70 on Saturday to move up to tied for 10th place (148). Amie Lehman (Pittsford, N.Y.) is in 72nd place (162, +16).
