ATHENS, GA. - Duke sophomore Beth Bauer (Cramerton, N.C.) fired a tournament and course record 67 in round one of the Liz Murphy Collegiate Classic to lead the Duke University women's golf team to first place at the end of round one at the University of Georgia Golf Club.
Bauer shot a six-under-par 67, which is the tournament and course record. The tournament record was 68 (6-under when the course was par 74) by Beth Daniel of Furman in 1977. The course record is now shared by Bauer, Beth Daniel, and Abby Pearson, who shot 6-under 67 at the 1993 NCAA Championships. The round of 67 is one away from Bauer's career-best at Duke (66).
Duke (ranked No. 2 in the Sagarin/No. 2 in MasterCard Collegiate rankings) posted a first round total of 291 to jump out to a six-stroke lead over Louisiana State. Auburn (299), Texas, Georgia, and Tennessee (300) round out the top six. Other ACC school's competing include Wake Forest (7th) and North Carolina (12th).
Freshman Kristina Engstrom (Djursholm, Sweden) is fifth with a two-under 71, which equal's her best collegiate round since being at Duke. Freshman Maria Garcia-Estrada (Tenerise, Spain) is tied for 19th with a 75, junior Kalen Anderson (Edina, Minn.) is tied for 44th (78), and Amie Lehman (Pittsford, N.Y.) is tied at 61st (80).
Sophomore Candy Hannemann is in the tournament as an individual and posted a first round total of 75 and is tied for 19th. The University of Georgia Golf Club is a par 73 and is 5,994 yards. The final two rounds will take place on Saturday and Sunday.
