The Blue Devils were led by senior Kalen Anderson (Edina, Minn.) who is currently tied for first individually (75-69=144, Even) as she turned in a career-best round of 69 on Saturday. Anderson recorded a 35-foot putt for birdie on the 18th green to finish off the day.
"My iron game was awesome today," said Anderson. "I was firing at the pins all day and most of my birdies came on the par fives."
Both Candy Hannemann (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Leigh Anne Hardin (Martinsville, Ind.) each kept up their steady play with cards of 72 on Saturday. The duo are tied for third individually along with Laura Henderson of Georgia (145, +1). Virada Nirapathpongporn is tied for 13th (74-77=151) and Kristina Engstrom is tied for 59th (81-80=161).
Rounding out the top five teams are Tennessee (602), Georgia (610), Wake Forest (614), and Memphis (615).
"I am not very excited about how the field fared today," said Duke head coach Dan Brooks. "I was very excited this morning as Candy had some great words for the team that were awesome. She told them to play as if the best teams in the country were here today and we needed to shoot par or under to win the tournament. That was perfect!"
Duke's lone individual, Maria Garcia-Estrada turned in a 78 on day two and is tied for 13th overall (73-78=151). All players will tee off at 9:00 A.M. at various holes on Sunday for the final round. If Duke can hold on to the lead the Blue Devils will claim their fourth consecutive Franklin Street Trust Tar Heel Invitational.
"Kalen's iron play was right on today," said Brooks. "I think she has some good thoughts on her swing right now and is really on the right track. I think we can match the effort we had today on Sunday and come away with a very successful round if the weather holds off.
