The 1999-2000 Duke women's golf team, the No. 1 ranked team in the country and the defending national champions, continued its outstanding play in the early part of the season by winning the 1999 Topy Cup in Fukushima, Japan. It was the second victory for Duke in as many tournaments this year.
In the rain-shortened, two-day event, Duke managed to come back from standing third after the first round to earning the title after the second round. Duke collected a team score of 313 on the first day and followed that up with a 287 in the final round for a total of 600, seven strokes better than Nihon University. Pepperdine, the only other American team in the competition, finished fifth at 636.
Duke freshman Kristina Engstrom, playing in her first collegiate event, secured individual medalist honors by firing scores of 75-71=145. Blue Devil sophomore Beth Bauer finished tied for second at 75-72=147, while fellow sophomore Candy Hannemann was tied for fourth at 78-72=150. Junior Kalen Anderson, who knocked in a hole-in-one on No. 16 during the event, collected rounds of 85-72=157 to finish 14th. Duke senior Amie Lehman completed the lineup tied for 21st at 85-78=163.
The event was played at the par 72, 5,900-yard Tanagura golf course.
