Duke vs. Santa Clara...
Duke and Santa Clara will be meeting for only the third time ever on
Sunday with the Broncos owning a 2-0 record against the Blue Devils.
The last meeting was in 1990 in California with Santa Clara winning
2-0. The year before in 1989 was their other meeting with Santa Clara
winning 1-0 in Durham, N.C. In two meetings the Broncos have outscored
the Blue Devils 3-0. Both teams did play one common opponent this
season as each team traveled to Clemson, S.C. to play. Duke tied Clemson
0-0 in two overtimes and Santa Clara won 2-1.
Santa Clara is making their 12th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and currently owns a 13-9-3 record in NCAA play. The Broncos goalkeeper Rusty Johnson ranks 11th in the nation with a 0.60 goals against average and as a team Santa Clara ranks fourth in the nation with a .575 GAA. They are also sixth in shutout percentage (.579). So far this season the Broncos own a 5-1 record against nationally ranked opponents and were ranked #1 in the nation for two weeks and in the top 10 for six different weeks, while currently being ranked #18.

Duke in the NCAA's...
This marks the 15th appearance for Duke in the NCAA Men's College Cup
and the 14th under head coach John Rennie in 21 seasons. The Blue
Devils, under Rennie, have made it to the Final Four four times. In
1982, Duke met Indiana in the national championship match and played an
unbelievable eight-overtime contest only to lose 2-1 to the Hoosiers.
Four years later in 1986, Rennie's squad captured Duke's first national
championship in any sport when they recorded a 1-0 shutout over Akron in
the national championship match. In 1992, the Blue Devils battled their
way to a Final Four spot only to be sent home with a 3-0 loss in the
semifinals to ACC foe Virginia. In 1995, Duke's last NCAA appearance,
the Blue Devils defeated Virginia 3-2 before falling to Wisconsin 2-0 in
the title match.
Duke has compiled a 19-13-1 record all-time in the NCAA Tournament for a .576 winning percentage. The Blue Devils are 8-7 in first-round NCAA Tournament contests, making it seven times that Duke has advanced to the second round. Duke is 4-3 in second round competition and 3-0-1 in quarterfinal action, advancing on PKs against SMU in 1992. Duke is 3-1 in NCAA semifinal action and 3-4 overall in the Final Four. The Blue Devils have scored 53 goals in the NCAA Tournament with seven shutouts. Duke's opponents have scored 56 goals and have eight shutouts against the Blue Devils. Duke is 13-4-1 at home in NCAA competition, 4-6-0 on the road, and 2-3-0 at neutral NCAA Final Four sites.
Perea's Goal Lifts Duke...
Freshman Trevor Perea had never scored a goal off a corner kick before
and what a perfect time for this to happen. In the 101st minute of the
match against UMBC, Perea went to take the corner kick and he was aiming
for the back post. The ball ended up curving right in the back of the
net with the goalkeeper not being able to react.
It was by far the biggest goal of Perea's career to advance the Blue Devils to the second round of the NCAA Men's College Cup. Duke got on the board first on Ali Curtis' 17 goal of the season, which tied the school- record for most goals in a season. Then, UMBC erupted for three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead. The three goals is the most Duke has allowed in one match this season.
Duke would not fold as junior Robert Russell placed a perfect shot in the right corner of the net to cut the UMBC lead to 3-2 with 30 minutes remaining. Twenty-two minutes later freshman Donald McIntosh scored on a header off senior Peter Gail's shot off the crossbar to even the score at 3-3.
One of the biggest plays of the match was in the 37th minute of the match when Blue Devil junior goalkeeper Jeff Haywood stopped a UMBC penalty kick, which was possibly the save of the match.
ACC Tournament Champs...
Junior Stephen Pate couldn't even remember scoring the game-winning
goal against Virginia in the 128th minute of the ACC Championship game,
but it is the biggest goal he has ever scored in his soccer playing
career. The Blue Devils pulled out a 2-1 triple overtime win over
Virginia to notch their first ever ACC Tournament title. Scoring the
other goal for Duke was junior Ali Curtis in the 8th minute of the
match. Duke had many other chances to increase the lead in the first
half but couldn't capitalize. Then, in the second half Virginia came
out on fire scoring their lone goal just two minutes into the half.
It was an incredible match with Jeff Haywood making some unbelievable saves in goal for the Blue Devils on their way to the victory.
Duke cruised to a 4-0 victory over North Carolina in the semifinals to advance to take on Virginia. Freshman Donald McIntosh and senior Troy Garner each scored two goals in the match. Garner also assisted on two goals. Haywood recorded his seventh shutout of the season.
Garner was named MVP of the Tournament with Robert Russell, Ali Curtis, Nii-Amar Amamoo, Jeff Haywood, Trevor Perea, and Donald McIntosh being named to the All-Tournament team.
ALL-ACC Blue Devils...
The No. 1 ranked Duke University men's soccer team received five
players on the All-ACC squad announced on Wednesday. Junior Ali Curtis
was selected ACC Player of the Year and head coach John Rennie was named
Coach of the Year. Other selections include Jeff Haywood, Robert
Russell, and Curtis were named to the All-ACC First Team and Nii-Amar
Amamoo and Troy Garner were named to the second team.
Curtis becomes Duke's third ever men's soccer player to be selected ACC Player of the Year after leading the ACC in points per game (40), goals (17), scoring (2.11/g), and goals per game (0.89/g). The junior from Milan, Mich. was selected ACC Player of the Week two different times during the season. Curtis was named to the All-ACC First Team as a freshman also. He has posted six game-winning goals.
Haywood, a junior goalkeeper from Cape Elizabeth, Maine , was selected to the first team as he leads the ACC with a 0.62 goals against average and .853 save percentage. For the season he has totaled seven shutouts, five of which came against ACC opponents.
Russell, a junior midfielder from Amherst, Mass., has collected two goals and two assists for six points this season. He has started all 14 matches played. The past two years in a row he was selected to the All-ACC second team.
Amamoo, a junior defenseman from Birmingham, Ala., has been a key defensive player for the Blue Devils in 1999 starting 18-of-19 matches. He has tallied three assists on the season.
Garner, a senior forward from Stone Mountain, Ga., ranks tied for third in the ACC in points (29), fourth in goals (11), third in scoring (1.53/g), and fourth in goals per game (0.58/g). For the season he has 29 points and recorded the game-winning goal in two of the last four matches. It marks the third time Garner has been selected to the All-ACC second team.
For the fifth time in his 21 years at Duke, Rennie has been named ACC Coach of the Year. He has guided the Blue Devils to an undefeated 16-0-3 season and for his career now has a 309-103-26 overall record at Duke.
Garner & Curtis Moving On Up...
Garner bolted by Ali Curtis with his six points in the first round of
the ACC Tournament vs. UNC and now boasts 96 points for his career.
With his three assists in the ACC Tournament Garner moved into sole
possession of 9th position on Duke's career assist list (26) and his
seven points moved him into 9th spot in points. For Garner's career he
has totaled 35 goals and 26 assists. For his career Curtis has now
totaled 95 points, which puts him 10th on the career points list at
Duke. With his 38 goals for his career he now ranks tied for ninth on
Duke's career goals scored list. With his goal vs. UMBC last Sunday,
Curtis tied the Blue Devil single season record for most goals in a
season (17). In his three-year career Curtis has totaled 38 goals and
19 assists.
With Curtis having one more year left at Duke he would need 33 more points to move into second place on the Blue Devils career points list and 53 more points to top Duke's career points list. Tom Kain is owns top spot on the career points list with 147, while Jay Heaps is second with 127.
Freshman Heroics, Again...
Freshman Donald McIntosh did it again this past Sunday as he scored the
match-tying goal with eight minutes remaining in regulation to even the
score at 3-3. He found himself wide open in the front of the net after
Peter Gail hit the cross bar and McIntosh just headed the ball in the
net.

He also came up huge in the semifinal match of the ACC Tournament as he scored the final two goals in route to a 4-0 victory over North Carolina. The first goal was from around 25 yards out on the right side and he nailed the ball to the back left of the net over the head of the Tarheel goalkeeper. For the season he is third on the team with 16 points (six goals and four assists).
Lewkowitz Out...
Sophomore midfielder Noah Lewkowitz has missed the last four matches
with a knee injury and could be back toward the end of the NCAA
Tournament depending on how far the Blue Devils advance. Before the
injury he had scored three goals and assisted on two others. He saw
action in 14 matches, while starting one.
Amamoo the Defensive Stopper...
Junior Nii-Amar Amamoo has really stepped up his play down the stretch
and saved many goals by stripping the ball or tackling the attacking
opponent. Amamoo is probably the fastest player on the field at any
give time and has shown his incredible speed, which has earned him a
position on Duke's track & field team. For the season he has started
18-of-19 games and has assisted on three goals.
In the Rankings...
The Blue Devils are now ranked #1 in all three men's soccer polls. For
the longest time Soccer America had them at No. 2 behind UCLA and
Indiana, but Duke was able to pass the Bruins with their ACC Tournament
title win. The two other polls are SoccerTimes.com and NSCAA. Duke has
been ranked No. 1 by the NSCAA poll for the past five weeks in a row and
haven't been below 12th all season long. In the Soccer America poll
Duke hasn't been below 16th and have been in the top 10 the last nine
polls.
Garner Lifts Duke over N.C. State...
Senior Troy Garner made his senior day on Nov. 6a little extra special
as he scored the game-winning goal in overtime to propel Duke over the
Wolfpack 3-2. It marked the third time this season he has notched the
game-winning goal for Duke. The other matches were Charleston Southern
and Elon. In his four-year career Garner has played in 77 matches,
while starting 74. Garner made it four game-winning goals with his two
goals vs. North Carolina in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament.
The Shutout...
So far this season the Duke men's soccer team has held opponents to
zero goals scored in 10-of-19 matches. The Blue Devils went on a streak
earlier this season as they didn't allow a goal in 604.69 minutes in a
row. The most shutouts in a season for a Duke squad is 13, which
happened in 1983 & 1985. The Duke record for most consecutive shutouts
is seven, which also took place in 1983. So far this season Duke has
only allowed 13 goals in 19 matches. The fewest goals allowed in
Rennie's 20 previous years was 12 in 19 matches in 1987.
The Blue Devils rank eighth in the nation in goals against average (.630) and 16th in shutout percentage (.474).
Rennie Most Successful Coach in Duke History... During Rennie's reign as Head Coach, Duke has won the school's first national championship, had four players earn the Hermann Trophy, two win the Missouri Athletic Club Award and two players named the national collegiate player of the year. Duke's defense has been a solid trademark since Rennie arrived in 1979 as the Blue Devils have posted 190 shutouts.
Rennie and the Blue Devils stopped Akron, 1-0, to win the 1986 NCAA Championship, the first national title won by a Blue Devil athletic squad. All together, Duke has been to the NCAA Tournament 13 times under Rennie, also going undefeated and advancing to the 1982 Final Four, again reaching the Final Four in 1992, making its' fourth trip in 1995.
The Blue Devils played eight overtimes before falling to Indiana in the 1982 championship game. Under Rennie's reign in the 1980s, Duke ranked fifth among Division I soccer programs in winning percentage and 15th in all divisions for both wins and winning percentage.
As far as individual honors Rennie has been voted National Coach of the Year in 1982, ACC Coach of the Year in 1980, 1983, 1987, 1997 and 1999, and South Region Coach of the Year in 1982, 1983, and 1997. Duke has had 23 All-America selections during Rennie's tenure, with 1995 graduate Jason Kreis being honored after the 1992, 1993, and 1994 seasons. Jay Heaps, a 1998 Blue Devil graduate, earned All-America status as a junior and senior.
This season Rennie notched his 350 victory in Duke's 3-2 overtime victory over N.C. State and now ranks seventh on the Division I all-time career victories list.
