DETROIT -- Duke freshman Bob Wheeler established a new NCAA record in the 1000 yard run Saturday afternoon, by running a time of 2:07.4 in the NCAA Indoor Track Meet.
As a team, Duke finished in a tie for 13th place in the tournament, with seven points. Villanova won the meet with 27 points.Â
Wheeler's time is fourth best in the world this year, and coach Al Buehler reports that he won the event by at least 15 yards.
Duke's other star, Jeff Howser, finished fifth in the 60 yard high hurdles to give the Blue Devils their other point. The meet was held in Detroit's Cobo Hall.Â
