Dan "Tiger" Hill, a member of the National Football Hall of Fame, was the co-captain and inspirational force on Duke's most famous football team, the 1938 Iron Dukes. The outstanding center helped lead the Blue Devils to nine straight victories without rendering a single point to the opposition. The Iron Dukes finished the season undefeated and did not allow a single score until their 7-3 loss to Southern Cal in the Rose Bowl.
Hill was known for his ability to lead, both on the field, often calling plays during the 1938 season, as well as on the Duke campus. Following graduation he served as assistant athletic director at Duke until 1953, when he resigned to enter private business.
