Kate Bruning joined Duke Athletics in 2026 as an Assistant Director of Athletic Medicine. She serves as the athletic trainer for the Blue Devils' women's basketball program, providing comprehensive medical care and supporting student-athletes through injury prevention, rehabilitation and return to play.
Prior to joining Duke, Bruning served as the associate athletic trainer for women's basketball at James Madison from 2022-26. She previously was the assistant athletic director for sports medicine at Texas A&M University-Commerce, overseeing athletic training services for volleyball, women's basketball and men's and women's golf. Earlier in her career, Bruning served as a senior athletic trainer at Texas A&M University-Commerce, worked as an assistant athletic trainer at Ashland for six years covering football, women's basketball and softball, and began her collegiate career as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Morehead State.
A native of Pemberville, Ohio, Bruning earned a Bachelor of Science in athletic training from Ashland in 2013 and a Master of Arts in sport management from Morehead State in 2015. She is a certified and licensed athletic trainer and also holds certifications in dry needling and facial manipulation.
