Dr. Joanna Foss, a Licensed Psychologist and Certified Mental Performance Consultant®, joined Duke Athletics in August 2023. In her role, Foss takes a holistic approach to student-athlete mental health and works with student-athletes on a range of presenting concerns including clinical mental health, sport performance enhancement and overall well-being. Foss provides individual and team mental health and performance enhancement services, consults with athletic department staff and develops psychoeducational and outreach programming.
Prior to Duke, Foss was a Counseling and Sport Psychologist in Auburn University Athletics for three years. Foss provided individual and team mental health and performance enhancement services, student-athlete and staff consultation, and outreach services. Foss also served on various committees including the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee and assisted in the development and implementation of a pre-doctoral intern training position in partnership with Student Counseling and Psychological Services.
She earned her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology with a specialization in Sport Psychology from the University of Missouri in 2019, and holds a master’s degree in Sport and Performance Psychology from the University of Denver (2014). During her doctoral tenure at the University of Missouri, she served as a Mental Performance Coach for Mizzou student-athletes for four years. Her undergraduate studies in psychology were completed at Marist College in December 2011, where she was also an active member of the volleyball team. Dr. Foss undertook her post-doctoral training at the University of Notre Dame, focusing on Clinical and Sport Psychology within the athletics department. She also completed her pre-doctoral internship at the University of North Carolina with a concentration in Sport Psychology.
An active participant in professional organizations including the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) and the Clinical/Counseling Sport Psychology Association, Dr. Foss was distinguished with AASP's 2019 Distinguished Doctoral Student Practice Award and received the 2014 Student Diversity Award (now the Inclusion, Diversity, and Excellence in Advocacy and Social Justice Student Award).
